Position Overview

The Head of Maintenance (Civil) is responsible for maintaining the structural integrity of buildings and other civil structures at Koidu Government Hospital (KGH), and the new Maternal Centre of Excellence (MCOE). This role entails managing building structures, plumbing network & sanitary wares, furniture and cabinetry. The Head of Maintenance (Civil) ensures a safe & enabling hospital environment by leading and supervising renovation & repairs of building structures (including rehabilitation & light construction works), maintenance of plumbing network, furniture and cabinetry fittings in both clinical and non-clinical spaces within the hospital facilities.

To be successful in this role, the Head of Maintenance (Civil) must have a Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Building Technology, or a related technical field from a recognized institution.

This position is open for both National and International Staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties & Responsibilities.

  • Lead and coordinate civil work repairs and maintenance on building structures - walls, foundations, floors and roof structures - within the hospital facility.
  • Periodically inspect the hospital facility structures to identify defects arising from day-to-day wear and tear.
  • Plan renovation and rehabilitation works on deteriorated building structure with a view of restoring structural integrity and ensuring safety of patients and staff.
  • Recommend structural improvements to the hospital facility buildings to ensure functional spaces are fit and safe for intended hospital operations.
  • Participate in assessment for structural upgrades, expansions and construction projects planned in the hospital facility and make technical inputs.
  • Design and supervise construction of complementary paving works, including laying concrete or interlocking tiles in outdoor areas, walkways, ramps, access pathways, curbs, and retaining structures for landscape or drainage control within the hospital facility.
  • Plan and supervise installation, preventive & corrective maintenance on water plumbing network system, including the sanitary wares & fittings to ensure uninterrupted supply of portable water and safe discharge of wastewater.
  • Plan and supervise installation, preventive & corrective maintenance on furniture, hardware and wooden/aluminum cabinetry installations in both medical and non-medical spaces.
  • Produce architectural designs and material specifications for building rehabilitation and construction projects planned for execution within the hospital facility.
  • Ensure surface finishing on building structures - plastering, screeding, painting, tile fixing, and concrete casting –are performed according to design specifications, material mix ratios, and adherence to standard curing duration.
  • Review designs and layouts for construction project outsourced to external companies to ensure designs are in line with intended functions.
  • Collaborate with the clinical, infrastructure and environmental services teams in designing and supervision of construction projects within hospital facilities to meet the functional medical operational needs.
  • Ensure all civil, plumbing, carpentry and hardware works adhere to hospital safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure team members use protective equipment and follow occupational health and safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with external contractors and maintenance vendors in supervision of civil works to ensure minimal disruption to hospital activities and safety of patients and staff.
  • Ensure construction materials & consumables, standard work tools, equipment and safety PPE are available for team members.
  • Support with recruitment, objectives setting & performance evaluation for maintenance team under supervision.
  • Manage and guide a team of painters, masons, carpenters, and plumbers, by identifying skills gap of and conducting continuous training to improve member’s capacity.
  • Assign work, provide on-site instruction, monitor performance, and ensure work quality.

Education and Work Experience Requirements:

Education & Training Requirements

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Building Technology or a related technical field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role;
  • Proven knowledge of modern and advanced construction renovation/rehabilitation techniques.
  • Proven experience is preparation of construction design briefs.
  • Experience in structural analyses and calculation is an added advantage.
  • Experience working in a hospital facility settings is an added advantage.

Skills

  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD/Revit/ArchiCad design software is mandatory.
  • Proficient in drafting bill of quantities and materials estimation is mandatory.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with project management software is a plus.
  • High level of accuracy & attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical & negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
