Vehicle Technician

A safe, reliable, and operationally available vehicle fleet is maintained through timely preventive maintenance, accurate fault diagnosis, effective repairs, vehicle recovery, onsite technical support, proper use of spare parts and tools, and accurate maintenance records. The Vehicle Technician provides timely technical assistance to field locations and contributes to minimizing vehicle downtime and ensuring continuity of operations.

This position is located in the Transport Unit of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan. The Vehicle Technician reports to the Chief Transport Officer and shall be responsible for the technical and operational effectiveness of UN owned standard commercial pattern vehicles and civilian armoured vehicles at the Transport workshop in Islamabad. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Transport Workshop Manager, the incumbent performs the following duties: Maintain, services and repairs of the United Nations vehicles owned fleet of light passenger Vehicle (LPVs), heavy transport vehicles and mobile handling equipment (MHE) in accordance with vehicle manufacture standards recommendations and schedules and per United Nations maintenance policy. Ensures that all relevant safety procedures have been followed when repairing and fitting replacement parts; assists in identifying, diagnosing and rectifying various faults; Assists with the identification of required parts. Perform, mechanical duties include engine tune ups, service of hydraulic brake system, cooling and fuel systems and the steering/suspension system including wheel alignment. Diagnoses, repair and overhaul major assemblies and components, e.g. engines, axles and transmissions; Identify various faults and diagnoses the problem with step-by-step as indicated in the service manual and electronic diagnosis tools. Auto body repairs duties include perform damage inspection and assessment to determine the extent and location of the damage; repair or replace damaged parts; panel beating on dents or damaged body and apply body filler; perform welding and bonding of damaged sections of panels; surface preparation, apply sanders, primer; perform painting and refinishing to restore the vehicle`s origin appearance; replace broken glasses and windshields. Test drive vehicles for technical analyses, ensuring quality control of repairs and road worthiness; works independently with minimum supervision, has the experience and ability to lead a team of junior vehicle mechanics; update the electronic service orders (SO) in the Electronic Vehicle Management System (EVMS) and or in UMOJA to reflect accurate records. Prepares cost estimates for the expendables used in the repair of UN vehicles and completes the relevant parts to the ‘Damage Discrepancy Reports (DDR). Perform vehicle recovery with specialist equipment; routinely use the advanced On-board analyzing system (OBD II), Keeps hand tools and common garage equipment in a safe operational condition and reports broken, lost or missing items to the supervisor. Ability to improvise and work independently away from the base workshop to provide customer service “on site” with or without the need of moving or deployment of heavy workshop tools and equipment. Perform any other responsibility deemed necessary or as delegated by the Supervisor.

Secondary/high-school education plus a recognized technical/vocational certificate or diploma in automotive mechanics, vehicle maintenance, diesel mechanics, or a related field. At least four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in Light and Heavy 4 x 4 vehicles maintenance and repairs. Knowledge and experience of automotive electric/electronic and/or automotive air conditioning system repairs is desirable. Appropriate technical and vocational qualifications in vehicle repair and maintenance are highly desirable. A valid driving licence for Light and Heavy duty vehicle is required. A practical automotive test assesses hands-on competency in fault detection, system servicing, shop safety, and repair verification across core vehicle systems.

Ability to communicate effectively in Urdu is required. Working knowledge of English is considered highly desirable.
