SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL (SI) is an international humanitarian aid association which, since more than 40 years, has been providing assistance to populations affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters by meeting their basic needs for food, water and shelter. Particularly committed to the fight against diseases linked to unsafe water, the leading cause of death in the world, SI's interventions provide expertise in the field of access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, but also in the essential area of food security and livelihoods. Present in 26 countries, the SI teams – 3200 people in total, made up of expatriates, national staff, permanent staff at HQ, and a few volunteers - intervene with professionalism and commitment while respecting cultural norms.
SI has been present in Sudan for a long time, untill expulsion in 2009 and subsequent reopening in the early 2010s.
Following the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023 and forced evacuation of Khartoum and West Darfur (El Geneina), SI was the first international NGO to re-enter Darfur and resume its emergency response.
Geneina base scaled up in 2024 and 2025 to deliver life-safing and recovery humanitarian assistance through WASH, FSL and Shelter interventions.
SI opened an office in Zalingei, Central Darfur in November 2024, North Darfur in 2024/5 and in Ed Daein and West Kordofan in 2026.
Today, thanks to the support of SIDA, SHF, CDCS, ECHO and UNDP, activities are being implemented in West Darfur, Central Darfur, East Darfur, North Darfur, West Kordofan, Khartoum and Jazeera States across WASH, Shelter and NFI support, Food Security and Livelihood sectors. SI is also in the process of opening up activities in Blue Nile State.
Across the Darfurs and in West Kordofan, the main share of the portfolio remains WASH -from 1st line to 2nd line & beyond- with the provision of water through water trucking, rehabilitation of water points/water yards, borehole drilling, networks, hygiene promotion, sanitation (emergency latrine construction, semi-permanent latrine, showers, desludging), solid waste management, WASH NFI distribution, and WASH in Health etc.
In West Darfur, SI remains one of the main WASH actors and has developped a strong technical and access capacity through the rehabilitation of water points/water yards, borehole drilling, hygiene promotion, sanitation (emergency latrine construction, semi-permanent latrine, showers, desludging), solid waste management, WASH NFI distribution, and WASH in Health etc.
In Central Darfur, the activities mostly focus on WASH and FSL. SI also has an Emergency Response Team based in Zalingei, Central Darfur, roving across Central and West Darfur, implementing rapid responses in WASH, Shelter/NFI and Food (CVA).
In the Eastern part of the country, SI is present with Wash and FSL activities in Khartoum and Jazeera, under ECHO, CDCS, SHF and US funds. Activities in Blue Nile are being launched by the end of 2026.
Most of the programs are being implemented in Consortium, including 2 led by SI, and require strong coordination efforts to provide area-based interventions. SI also has a strong localization approach, with diverse local partners in all states.
