Position Overview |
The Midwife Clinical Educator is responsible for strengthening the knowledge, clinical competence, professional practice, and leadership capacity of midwives and maternity staff at Koidu Government Hospital. The position supports evidence-based, respectful, and safe maternity care through structured clinical teaching, mentorship, coaching, simulation-based learning, competency assessments, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. The Midwife Clinical Educator will work closely with the maternity leadership team, nursing and midwifery managers, clinical teams, and academic institutions to ensure that all RMNCAH staff provide high-quality, patient-centered care aligned with national guidelines, professional standards, and global best practices. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: |
Clinical Education and Mentorship - Develop and implement a structured clinical evidence-based education, mentorship and preceptorship program for midwives, nurses, and maternity healthcare workers.
- Provide bedside coaching and clinical supervision to strengthen essential midwifery and nursing competencies.
- Mentor newly recruited midwives, interns, students, and junior staff during clinical practice.
- Identify individual learning needs and develop targeted improvement plans.
- Support transition-to-practice programs for newly qualified RMNCAH staff.
- Promote a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and professional development.
2. Skills Training and Competency Development - Conduct regular clinical skills training sessions based on identified gaps and service priorities.
- Facilitate simulation-based training for all obstetric and neonatal emergencies, including:
- Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) prevention and management
- Neonatal resuscitation
- Immediate care of the newborn
- Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy
- Emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC)
- Safe cesarean section preparation and postoperative care
- Respectful maternity care practices
- Develop and maintain competency checklists and assessment tools.
- Conduct pre- and post-training evaluations to measure knowledge and skills improvement.
- Support continuing professional development (CPD) activities for maternity staff.
3. Clinical Practice Improvement - Promote adherence to evidence-based guidelines, protocols, and standard operating procedures.
- Support implementation of quality improvement initiatives within the m
- Participate in clinical audits, chart reviews, case reviews, and maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response activities.
- Identify gaps in clinical practice and recommend corrective actions.
- Support implementation and monitoring of maternity improvement projects, including Safe Childbirth Checklist implementation.
- As part of the education team, actively participate in the academic accreditation process of KGH
4. Support for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety - Participate actively in Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) quality improvement cycles.
- Support data collection, analysis, and use of findings to improve maternity outcomes.
- Promote patient safety practices, infection prevention, respectful care, and effective communication.
- Encourage teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration among healthcare providers.
- Support implementation of patient-centered care approaches.
- Work closely with the Patient Safety, Quality of Care Team and nursing and midwifery leads to address learning and competency needs highlighted through serious incidents and near miss investigations.
- Work closely with the Research and Ethics Team to ensure that relevant research is embedded in the RMNCAH Curriculum and guidelines
5. Development of Learning Materials and Training Resources - Develop and update teaching materials, clinical guides, competency assessment tools, and mentorship resources using the most up to date and evidence based material
- Adapt training materials and teaching styles to local needs and available resources.
- Maintain a clinical education repository for nursing and midwifery staff.
- Support documentation of training activities, outcomes, and lessons learned.
6. Supervision and Performance Support - Provide constructive feedback to midwives and maternity staff based on clinical observations.
- Support staff performance improvement plans where required.
- Collaborate with nurse managers, supervisors and nurse educator to address clinical competency gaps.
- Promote professional ethics, accountability, and adherence to regulatory standards.
7. Data Management and Reporting - Maintain accurate records of:
- Staff trained and mentored
- Clinical competencies achieved
- Training evaluations
- Mentorship activities
- Improvement outcomes
- Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on clinical education activities.
- Support monitoring and evaluation of maternity workforce development programs.
- Ensure National policies are adhered to by all staff and report any non-compliance as necessary.
- Contribute to the development of national and local policies and guidelines where applicable.
8. Collaboration and Representation - Work collaboratively with:
- Nursing and Midwifery leadership
- Nurse and other Clinical Educator/s
- Clinical Education Committee
- All other clinical teams
- Nursing and midwifery schools
- Quality improvement team
- Partners supporting maternal and newborn health
- Participate in clinical meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and professional development forums.
- Represent the RMNCAH education program in relevant technical meetings.

Education and Work Experience Requirements: |
Education - Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery or Nursing and Midwifery.
- Master’s degree or equivalent as a Midwife/Nurse Educator
- Valid registration to practice as a Midwife and Clinical Educatore with the Nursing and Midwifery Council from your country
- Minimum of 3 years practicing as a qualified Midwife Educator
- Master’s degree in a relevant health related field is a distinct advantage
- Obstetric Emergency Simulation Training certification from a recognized institution
Experience - Minimum of 5 years of clinical midwifery experience, preferably in a busy referral maternity facility.
- Demonstrated experience in:
- Clinical teaching and mentorship
- Emergency obstetric and newborn care
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Staff training and capacity building
- Clinical audits and guideline implementation
- Research and Ethics
- Experience working in resource-limited healthcare settings is desirable.
Required Skills and Competencies Clinical Competencies - Strong knowledge of current midwifery practices and evidence-based maternal and newborn care.
- Demonstrable practical and theoretical knowledge in managing obstetric emergencies.
- Ability to demonstrate and teach clinical procedures effectively to a range of learners
- Ability to work autonomously setting own targets and measuring performance against these targets
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Negotiation and persuasion skills
- Accurate documentation with attention to detail
- Exemplary demonstration of the Code of Conduct and Ethics of a Registered Midwife and can clearly be seen to lead by example
