Data analytics internship in the UPR Branch

This internship is in the Universal Periodic Review Branch (UPRB), which is located within the Human Rights Council and Treaty Mechanisms Division (HRCTMD) of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). OHCHR (https://www.ohchr.org/en/ohchr_homepage) is the leading UN entity on human rights, whose mission is to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented. The UPRB acts as the Secretariat of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, which was created in 2006 through the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/251, which established the Human Rights Council (HRC). The UPR is a human rights mechanism that involves a review of the human rights records of all United Nations Member States every four and a half years. The UPR is a State-driven process that provides the opportunity for each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situation in their respective countries, whilst fulfilling their human rights obligations. The UPR also reminds States of their responsibility to fully respect and implement all human rights and fundamental freedoms, while addressing human rights violations wherever they occur. The UPR ensures equal treatment for every country when human rights situations are assessed. More information on the UPR can be found at https://www.ohchr.org/en/hr-bodies/upr/upr-home The assignment is performed under the overall guidance of the Chief of the UPR Branch. The intern reports to the Human Rights Officer responsible for the internship program within the UPR Branch. The intern will support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission. Daily responsibilities of UPR interns will depend on the individual's background and duties may include but are not limited to supporting the UPR Branch in the accomplishment of its projects and/or activities. In particular, the intern may:

• Conduct data research into specific areas of the UPR's work.
• Provide support in the preparation of statistics.
• Help with the indexing of the UPR recommendations.
• Assist in the preparation of electronic material (infographics, presentations, and video snapshots).
• Participate in information management discussions and in the design of visualization solutions, including templates and icons.
• Assist in the design and development of digital services, platforms and tools, including the collaborative development of mock-ups and prototypes, using a variety of digital tools with the aim to improve their accessibility, user-friendliness, and aesthetics.
• Support the team by developing tutorials and supporting materials on digital services, tools and platforms.
• Perform other tasks as requested, as appropriate.

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat internship program applicants must, at the time of the application, be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first-level university degree program (i.e. minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent degree); or be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher -i.e. Master's degree), preferably in the area of data science studies or related experience, with a university degree as defined above. Relevant academic and/or experience in the following would be highly regarded: - Proficiency in standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Power Point, MS Excel, MS Teams, Power BI, Python, Co-pilot, SQL… - Good knowledge or user experience in databases and applications and in data research, data analysis and statistics. - Good knowledge or user experience in web design, digital service design, graphic design, and video production and editing (Adobe Suite, Canva, WordPress, etc). - Ability to design surveys and polls is desirable. - Knowledge of Political, Social Sciences or International Relations would be an asset. Applicants to the UN Internship Program are not required to have professional work experience but must, at the time of the application, be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first-level university degree program (i.e. minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent degree); or be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher -i.e. Master's degree), preferably in the area of data science or related experience, with a university degree as defined above. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English is required, knowledge of French is an asset. Knowledge of another official United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
