Temporary Data Services Engineer

EUMETSAT is evolving its online data services to provide scalable, reliable and secure access to increasingly large volumes of Earth Observation data. These services are implemented as cloud-based data services, making use of modern software engineering, cloud-native, data and platform technologies.

Within the Big Data Services team, the Data Services Engineer will contribute to the design, development and evolution of the software components and technical capabilities supporting these services.

The role requires a versatile and hands-on engineer combining software development and cloud engineering skills. The post holder will be responsible for the design, maintenance and evolution of the Identity and Access Management and API management solutions within the Big Data Services portfolio, and will contribute to the development and operation of other shared technical capabilities supporting EUMETSAT's online data services, including observability, service integration, automation and CI/CD.

NB This is not a staff role. This is a temporary role with an expected duration of 24 months. The incumbent will be engaged through a temporary agency and will be required to work under their terms and conditions. Applicants will be required to have the right to work in Germany. Working permits / visa support will not be provided.

Duties

  • Design, develop and evolve scalable and reliable cloud-based software components, including APIs, automation and integration solutions supporting EUMETSAT data services;
  • Maintain and evolve Identity and Access Management and API management solutions supporting the Big Data Services portfolio, including identity federation, authentication and authorisation, API gateways and access-control mechanisms
  • Contribute to the development and evolution of shared technical capabilities, including observability, service integration, automation and CI/CD;
  • Apply DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering practices to improve automation, scalability, resilience and operational efficiency;
  • Deploy and maintain data services using cloud-native technologies and Kubernetes-based platforms;
  • Perform technical architecture activities and define and implement appropriate engineering solutions;
  • Define technical work packages and procurement documentation, and lead the technical coordination of their execution by industrial partners;
  • Maintain technical documentation and contribute to EUMETSAT software engineering and quality management processes;
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, operations teams, security specialists and industrial partners involved in the development and operation of the services

Duties

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in software engineering, DevOps, SRE or a comparable role;
  • Strong software development skills in at least one modern programming language, such as Python, Rust, Go or Java;
  • Proven Experience in one or more relevant areas such as IAM, API gateways, cloud platforms, object storage/S3 or large-scale data services;
  • Proven experience with Linux, containers, Kubernetes and cloud-native architectures;
  • Experience with APIs, distributed services, CI/CD, automation and Infrastructure as Code;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to define pragmatic technical solutions and adapt to evolving requirements;
  • Good communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders and industrial partners.

Employment Conditions

The Temporary Data Services Engineer will work on a full-time basis. The role will be based at the EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Remote working will not be possible.

Interviews for this position will be held in English, followed by a work-related assessment also in English.

NB This is NOT a staff role. The successful candidate would be employed through a temp agency for the duration of the contract. Agency employment conditions will apply. Applicants will need to have the right to work in Germany. Visa or work permit support will not be provided.

The target start date is as soon as possible and the expected duration will be 6 months.
