International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe)

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is an international research institute working on insects and other arthropods to improve human, animal, plant and environmental health in Africa, known as its ‘4H’ approach. It was founded in 1970 by the Kenyan entomologist Thomas Odhiambo. Its headquarters is the Duduville campus in Kasarani, Nairobi, with the Thomas Odhiambo Campus at Mbita on Lake Victoria, field sites in Kenya and a country office in Ethiopia. It employs more than 400 staff.

Staff vacancies are published on the icipe recruitment portal (recruit.icipe.org) and the icipe website, covering research, technical and support posts at headquarters, country offices and field stations. icipe also offers MSc and PhD placements through its ARPPIS and Dissertation Research Internship (DRIP) programmes and two-year postdoctoral fellowships. icipe states that it never charges application fees.

icipe staff carry out applied research on malaria vectors, livestock diseases, crop pests, pollinators and insects for food and feed, and help take technologies such as push-pull pest control to farmers. Roles include scientists, research assistants, laboratory and field technicians, data specialists and operations staff. Most are based in Nairobi or at the Mbita campus, with others at field sites and in country offices across Africa.
