The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the UN General Assembly in June 2023 to clarify the fate and whereabouts of all missing persons in Syria, regardless of when or by whom they went missing.
This includes people who disappeared during the Syrian conflict and those whose whereabouts remain unknown for other reasons.

A particularly important distinction is that IIMP is focused on clarifying the fate and whereabouts of missing people, rather than primarily establishing criminal responsibility. This complements the work of the IIIM, which focuses on collecting and preserving evidence relating to serious international crimes.
