Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP)

The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) was established by the UN General Assembly in June 2023 to clarify the fate and whereabouts of all missing persons in Syria, regardless of when or by whom they went missing.

This includes people who disappeared during the Syrian conflict and those whose whereabouts remain unknown for other reasons.

The IIMP's work focuses on:

• Finding and identifying missing persons
• Supporting families of missing persons
• Collecting and analysing information
• Forensic and scientific approaches
• Mapping and investigation
• Human rights and accountability
• Engagement with victims, families and civil society
• Cooperation with Syrian and international actors

A particularly important distinction is that IIMP is focused on clarifying the fate and whereabouts of missing people, rather than primarily establishing criminal responsibility. This complements the work of the IIIM, which focuses on collecting and preserving evidence relating to serious international crimes.
