Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM)

The Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) was established by the UN Human Rights Council in September 2018. Its mandate is to collect, consolidate, preserve and analyse evidence of the most serious international crimes and violations of international law committed in Myanmar since 2011, and prepare files to facilitate fair and independent criminal proceedings.

It is not a court, prosecutor or police force. Instead, it builds and preserves evidence that can be shared with national, regional or international courts and tribunals that have jurisdiction. Its work covers potential genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, among other serious violations.
