About ASEAN Foundation
Decades after ASEAN was established, ASEAN leaders recognised that there remained inadequate shared prosperity, ASEAN awareness and contact among people of ASEAN. It was because of this concern that ASEAN leaders established the ASEAN Foundation during the ASEAN 30th Anniversary Commemorative Summit in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on 15 December 1997.
The ASEAN Foundation takes pivotal role to fulfil these gaps. As one of ASEAN’s bodies, we are tasked to support ASEAN mainly in promoting awareness, identity, interaction and development of the people of ASEAN. We unite people. And we help to develop them. We are a strategic instrument to achieve ASEAN’s goal.
Since its inception in 1997, the ASEAN Foundation has successfully managed initiatives in ten ASEAN countries to realise its four primary mandates. The projects and activities of the foundation are ranging from training, workshops, scholarship grants, regional forums and meetings, interaction activities and exchanges, seminars and conferences, publicity and promotions.
From 2014 to May 2019, the ASEAN Foundation has implemented 20 initiatives, impacting over 17,000 youths across ASEAN. Among a dozen of programmes that have been accomplished and currently being implemented, ASEAN Foundation has particularly four thematic areas:
