Energy System Modeler - Energy and Sustainable Busimess Program

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You will be based in our office in WRI Indonesia, Jakarta. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia’s Energy and Sustainable Business (ESB) Portfolio works to advance reliable, clean energy while reducing carbon emissions and supporting economic development. Recognizing the interconnected nature of economic, social, and environmental goals, the program collaborates across disciplines, including with WRI’s cities, climate, and ocean teams to integrate low-carbon technologies, quantitative models, and policy tools. These efforts align with national priorities such as accelerating Indonesia’s net-zero targets by 2050 for industry and 2060 for the broader economy.

To strengthen evidence-based energy planning, WRI Indonesia is expanding its analytical capability to better connect sectoral demand signals with clean energy supply opportunities. This includes developing integrated modelling frameworks that assess renewable energy availability, electricity system readiness, spatial demand distribution, and infrastructure requirements to inform strategic investment and policy decisions. This modelling work is expected to generate practical insights on where clean energy demand is emerging, how prepared the system is to meet that demand, and what infrastructure or policy interventions may be needed to accelerate reliable and low-carbon energy deployment.

Job Highlight

The Energy Modeler will serve as the primary technical role in developing, maintaining, and enhancing WRI Indonesia's energy system modelling platform, this include development of modelling methodologies, programming workflow, data processing and integration, scenario development, validation, and technical documentation to ensure the modelling platform remains transparent, reproducible, and scalable.

The Energy Modeler will work across Workflow 1 (Regional Decarbonization) and Workflow 2 (Industrial Decarbonization). Workflow 1 examines the implication of transport electrification on electricity demand, charging infrastructure requirements, and power system readiness, with the objective of enabling more coordinated planning between the transport and electricity sectors.

As the modeling platform continue to evolve, the role will also contribute to broader analytical work related to electricity systems, renewable energy deployment, industrial electrification, demand forecasting, infrastructure planning, and other clean energy supply initiatives. This work is organized around two broad focus areas, regional decarbonization and industrial decarbonization-related analytical work. In parallel, under Workflow 2 (industrial decarbonization), WRI Indonesia is developing a power demand mapping framework that spatially aggregates electricity demand across sectors and evaluates its implications for renewable energy deployment and transmission planning. Both initiatives require robust modelling capabilities to ensure the analytical framework remains technically sound, scalable, and adaptable as new data and stakeholder requirements emerge.

Reporting directly to Energy Research Analyst, this position will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement and will work closely with project leads and the research team within the Energy and Sustainable Business portfolio.

What You Will Do

Knowledge and Research Work (70%)

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve WRI Indonesia's energy system modelling platform, with a primary focus on Workflow 1 and 2 initiatives with the first focus on quantitative assessment on transport electrification, charging demand, electricity system readiness, grid impacts, renewable energy integration, and long-term electricity system flexibility.

  • Design modelling methodologies, scenario assumptions, analytical frameworks, and validation approaches that support evidence-based research and decision-making.

  • Develop analytical workflows using relevant modelling platforms, including data processing, model execution, visualization, and quality assurance.

  • Collect, integrate, process, and validate energy, transport, electricity system, and geospatial datasets required for modelling activities.

  • Conduct scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, and technical assessments to evaluate infrastructure requirements, electricity demand growth, renewable energy deployment, and system planning alternatives.

  • Prepare technical reports, working papers, presentations, publications, and documentation that communicate modelling methodologies, analytical findings, and policy implications.

  • Contribute modelling expertise to other research activities within the Energy & Sustainable Business team, including renewable energy planning, power system analysis, electricity demand assessment, industrial energy transition, and other energy system modelling initiatives as required.

Project Management (20%)

  • Work closely with project leads and researchers to translate research objectives into modelling approaches, workplans, and technical deliverables.

  • Manage modelling tasks, monitor progress against project milestones, and ensure timely delivery of analytical outputs.

  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, coding standards, version control, and quality assurance procedures to ensure modelling workflows remain reproducible and transferable.

Stakeholder Engagement (10%)

  • Provide technical support during meetings, workshops, consultations, and discussions with government agencies, utilities, development partners, research institutions, and private sector stakeholders.

  • Present modelling methodologies, assumptions, and analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences while incorporating stakeholder feedback into model improvements.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across WRI Indonesia to strengthen the organization's quantitative modelling capability and support future research and project development.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Electric Power Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Data Science, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other related disciplines. A master’s degree is preferred.

  • Minimum 5 (five) years of professional experience in energy system modelling, electricity planning, transport electrification, renewable energy analysis, or related quantitative analytical work.

  • Robust understanding of electricity systems, renewable energy integration, electricity demand forecasting, transport electrification, charging infrastructure, grid planning, and quantitative energy analysis.

  • Ability to independently develop modelling methodologies, validate analytical outputs, troubleshoot technical issues, and continuously improve modelling workflows.

  • Familiarity with Excel / Google Sheets / GitHub for data organization and analysis.

  • Experience using one or more energy modelling platforms such as PyPSA, PLEXOS, LEAP, OSeMOSYS, TIMES, HOMER Pro, EnergyPLAN, or equivalent.

  • Experience with GIS and spatial analysis using QGIS, ArcGIS, GeoPandas, Rasterio, PostGIS, or equivalent tools is preferable. Experience handling and integrating large, multi-source datasets, including electricity, transport, renewable energy, and geospatial information.

  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and modelling results effectively through reports, presentations, and stakeholder discussions in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.

  • Ability and willingness to travel as assigned

  • Legally able to work in Indonesia

Duration

The assignment is expected to commence at the earliest opportunity for an initial contract period up to 28 February 2027 with possible extension subject to individual performance evaluation, project needs, and budget availability.

Deliverables

1. A functional, documented, and reproducible energy system modelling platform for Workflow 1 and 2, including modelling codes, workflows, assumptions, and technical documentation.

2. Quantitative modelling outputs assessing transport electrification, electricity demand, charging infrastructure, electricity system readiness, renewable energy integration, and long-term system flexibility under multiple scenarios.

3. High-quality analytical datasets, modelling databases, and data processing pipelines that support robust, transparent, and reproducible analyses.

4. Technical reports, working papers, publications, presentation materials, and other knowledge products that effectively communicate modelling methodologies, assumptions, findings, and policy implications.

5. Technical inputs and modelling analyses supporting project implementation, stakeholder engagement, proposal development, and other research activities within the Clean Energy Supply portfolio, as required.

6. Well-maintained modelling documentation, version-controlled repositories, and knowledge transfer materials to support the long-term sustainability and continuous improvement of WRI Indonesia's in-house modelling capability.

Term of Payment

Daily rate-based consultant with a maximum of 18 (eighteen) working days per month.
