Job Description

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is a leader in sustainable investment in emerging markets. IFC promotes private sector development and economic growth as a way to reduce poverty and improve people’s lives. IFC works to help achieve the World Bank Group’s overarching goals of ending extreme poverty by 2030, and stimulating shared prosperity in every developing nation. In order to understand its impact, IFC has developed a results measurement system and a cohort of staff who specialize in helping operational colleagues understand and articulate the development impact of their projects. At the project level, IFC sets out to achieve concrete, measurable internal development targets that are specified at the design phase and, if needed, reviewed from time to time. Progress towards achieving these targets is continuously tracked by our monitoring system, after which we employ evaluative approaches using multiple methods to assess the longer-term impact of interventions. This deliberate, systematic approach allows us tracking the progress of our projects throughout their life cycle, and incorporate lessons learned into operations to improve future goal-setting and project design. It also helps become more results-focused and improve our transparency and accountability to our stakeholders. The Development Impact Measurement Department (CDI) analyzes economic sectors with a view to identifying opportunities and solutions for private sector development. CDI works closely with IFC Operations in formulating sector priorities and strategies. The department is in charge of implementing IFC’s impact assessment framework (AIMM) for investment and advisory projects throughout the project cycle. It is also responsible for promoting high-quality economic analyses to inform strategies and project design. The department offers “end-to-end” support for the assessment of development impact, engaging upstream and downstream throughout the project cycle. CDI seeks a Fellow who will join the CDIMA Unit supporting Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services (MAS) operations at IFC. Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Fellow will support development impact portfolio monitoring, assessment, and learning, while assisting with ex ante assessments of prospective investments. Working under the supervision of CDIMA staff, the Fellow will contribute analytical, research, and data management support across the investment lifecycle.
  • Assist with ex ante development impact assessments using the AIMM approach incorporating project, sector, country, and market research; compile benchmarks, assess development gaps, and prepare supporting analysis and draft assessment inputs.
  • Support AIMM monitoring by reviewing project documentation, checking indicator data against baselines and targets, identifying evidence gaps, and preparing draft monitoring narratives for review.
  • Assist with ETA preparation through evidence compilation, data analysis, drafting, and coordination of inputs from relevant colleagues.
  • Support Terminal Assessments by comparing achieved results with anticipated outcomes, examining performance drivers, and documenting lessons learned.
  • Implement a pilot for “Warranting Impact” processes, including data collection, preparation, cleaning, validation, management, and documentation; support testing of workflows and analytical outputs.
  • Maintain organized datasets, evidence repositories, and assessment trackers; prepare briefs, presentations, and other analytical products; undertake related assignments as required.
