Job Description

Result of Service

Through these services the Initiative will be able to provide behavioural coaching to develop leadership capabilities in work roles and relationships, in line with UN values and behaviours. In particular:

  • Inclusion: o Treat people with dignity and respect. o Actively seek and incorporate a diversity of perspectives, ways of thinking, experiences, and opinions in decision-making.
  • Humility: o Engage others in addressing problems and finding solutions, accepting that there is likely to be more than one possible approach.
  • Deliver results with positive impact: o Hold oneself accountable for demonstrating the UN standards of conduct in delivering results.
  • Analyse and plan: o Seek out and use data from a wide range of sources to understand problems, inform decision-making, propose evidence-based solutions and plan action. o Encourage sharing of information, data, experience, and expertise between staff and across teams.
  • Integrity: o Act ethically, demonstrating the standards of conduct of the United Nations and taking prompt action in case of witnessing unprofessional or unethical behaviour, or any other breach of UN standards. The services will help promote UN values and behaviours in the roles and responsibilities of UNEP FI personnel and group dynamics. The consultant will provide coaching to develop the capabilities and competencies of UNEP FI personnel in areas including effectiveness in leading teams, facilitating teamwork, empowering personnel, managing conflicts, ensuring integrity, and managing performance. The consultant’s work will also contribute to upholding UN core values, ensuring that human rights based approach, the principle of leaving no one behind and gender equality and women’s empowerment are integrated throughout their work at UNEP FI’s. For two personnel, coaching support in relation to identified behavioural issues will be provided, while any formal performance or remedial action remains with management/HR.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s work is firmly grounded in the UN core values, including the human rights-based approach, the commitment to leaving no one behind, and the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment across all activities. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers, and investors. For over 34 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards, and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI needs a consultant to assist with executive coaching requirements, and currently does not have the relevant professional expertise internally. Objectives: The services will help promote UN values and behaviours in the roles and responsibilities of UNEP FI personnel and group dynamics. The consultant will provide coaching to develop the capabilities and competencies of UNEP FI personnel in areas including effectiveness in leading teams, facilitating teamwork, empowering personnel, managing conflicts, ensuring integrity, and managing performance. For two personnel, coaching support in relation to identified behavioural issues will be provided, while any formal performance or remedial action remains with management/HR. Specific tasks and responsibilities: The consultant will provide assistance in the following tasks in supporting UNEP FI Team Leads and Management:
  • 12 coaching sessions.
  • Supporting Team Leads and management in ensuring that all outputs, projects and management interactions internally and externally reflect UNEP and UN core values, including human rights-based approach, the principle of leaving no one behind and gender equality and women’s empowerment, and contribute to internal awareness on these values.
  • Supporting Team Leads and management in ensuring that they oversee the implementation of UNEP FI’s 2026–2029 Social Action Plan by including all relevant measures from the plan in their daily work both internally within the Secretariat and externally with our members and partners. Outputs and Deliverables:
  • 12 coaching sessions on leadership skills including self-awareness, boundary setting, tools to lead and manage teams; generate trust, cooperation and alignment /coordination across programme areas; Build capacity of team to mentor and motivate teams; identify strengths and create efficiencies within teams.
  • The above deliverables will be developed and implemented in alignment with UNEP FI’s Social Action Plan and guided by the UN’s core values. The consultant will report to: Overall supervisor: The Head of UNEP FI. Direct Supervisor: The Programme Management Officer, UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Education: A master’s degree in business, organizational change or coaching is required. A bachelor’s degree could be taken in lieu of master’s degree provided the selected candidate has 9 years of relevant experience. Professional Experience: At least seven (7) years of relevant professional experience in executive coaching, leadership development, organizational development/change management, or a closely related field is required. Up-to-date proficiency in executive team coaching to promote a reflective leadership approach to managing work roles and relationships is required. Experience in learning and development of senior executives to help build collaboration is required.

Languages

Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Additional Information

Skills & Knowledge: Excellent knowledge of executive team coaching. Understanding of developing leadership skills and enhancing supervisory skills for organizational value creation. Ability to cultivate management capabilities to reduce boundaries created by functional silos and build a culture of collaboration. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural environment across teams. Understanding of diverse management styles and behaviours desirable.
