European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control Traineeship programme 2027

Applications are invited for the Traineeship programme at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The Centre is in Stockholm, Sweden. The legal base for the Centre is Regulation (EC) No 851/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 April 2004 establishing a European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control . Description of the Traineeship p rogramme

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Traineeship programme provides trainees with an understanding of the Centre and its role within the activities of the European Union, as well as an opportunity to acquire practical knowledge and professional experience.

As part of the ECDC’s Traineeship programme, the Epidemic Intelligence Group offers trainees with a scientific/public health background the opportunity to join the Epidemic Intelligence Group during a set period, to gain real-life experience on Epidemic Intelligence operations.

The Traineeship programme is organised annually. In 2027, traineeships at ECDC will have a duration of between five and nine months. While the exact duration will be determined by the hosting unit, and agreed with the selected trainee, applicants should note that traineeships are typically offered for longer periods within this range.

ECDC intends to recruit 12 trainees, with one traineeship position available in each of the areas listed below, grouped by organisational unit.

Minimum Requirements

To be an eligible candidate, you must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Be a national of an EU Member State, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein;
  • Have completed your studies and been awarded a full university degree by the closing date for applications;
  • Have a very good command of English (the working language of ECDC);
  • Have not previously participated in a formal traineeship or employment (paid or unpaid) within a European institution, agency or body.

Application procedure

Applicants should preferably apply to one professional area related to their education and professional background.

To apply for the Traineeship programme, please create/log in to your account via ECDC’s e- recruitment system, complete all required sections of the application and submit. ECDC does not accept applications submitted by e-mail, mail or any other means.

Applications for the 2027 Traineeship programme shall be submitted between 8 September and 5 October 12.00 PM (noon) Stockholm time. Only applications submitted during this period will be considered.

You are advised to submit your application well ahead of the deadline in case you face technical issues and/or if there is heavy traffic on the website. ECDC will not accept any applications after the deadline. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an automatic e-mail message confirming the receipt of your application. Please ensure that the email address you provide for your applicant account is correct and that you check your email regularly.

Any false statement or omission, even if unintended, may lead to a cancellation of the application or termination of the traineeship.

Due to the large volume of applications only applicants selected for an interview will be notified.

The Selection process

Reserve list

A reserve list of candidates may be drawn up by ECDC following the interviews and used, should additional traineeship opportunities arise. It will be valid until 31 December 2027. Equal opportunities

Practical information

Training Grant

ECDC provides a monthly traineeship grant, reviewed annually, together with a travel allowance intended to contribute towards expenses incurred when travelling from the place of residence at the start and end of the traineeship.

The exact amount of the traineeship grant applicable in 2027 has not yet been established and will be communicated to the selected candidates. For information purposes, the monthly traineeship grant for 2026 is EUR 2,205.72.

Tax arrangements

The Traineeship programme does not entail an employment relation between the trainee and ECDC. Trainees receive a monthly grant from ECDC, but as ECDC is not the employer of the trainee, ECDC does not pay any social security contribution related to the traineeship.

ECDC informs trainees that it is their responsibility to pay income taxes where due in accordance with their individual personal circumstances.

Accommodation

Trainees are responsible for finding their own accommodation. ECDC cannot provide accommodation, however, limited information on how to find accommodation may be provided.

Health insurance

Trainees must take out health insurance valid in Sweden, prior to the start of their traineeship at the ECDC. Proof of this insurance will be requested prior to starting.

Rejected applications

Please note that the decision of ECDC to reject an application is final and binding and there is no appeal procedure. If an application is unsuccessful, a candidate may re-apply for a subsequent training period. It is, however, necessary to submit a new application.
