Job Description

The position is to be filled by November 1st, 2026 , with an initial contract duration of one year. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Damascus, Syrian Arab Republic (SY).

WHH has been engaged in the Syria response since 2013, supporting displaced people and host communities in Syria and neighbouring countries, including Lebanon and Türkiye, through humanitarian assistance, early recovery and resilience-building programmes.Working closely with local partner organisations, WHH focuses on food security, livelihoods and sustainable solutions, promoting locally led and context-specific programming while continuously adapting to the evolving operational environment.

As Head of Finance, you will support the Country Director in ensuring the effective and compliant financial management of Welthungerhilfe’s programmes and projects across Syria, Türkiye and Lebanon. You will ensure that financial and administrative processes are efficient, transparent and auditable and that Welthungerhilfe’s internal standards, donor requirements and applicable regulations are consistently implemented.

You will provide strategic and operational financial guidance to the Country Office, project teams and partner organisations and lead the Finance and Administration team.

Your responsibilities

  • Ensure efficient, transparent and auditable financial and administrative processes across the Country Office, projects and partner organisations
  • Advise the Country Director and programme and project management teams on financial planning, budgeting, donor requirements and other financial and administrative matters
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, liquidity planning, project accounting, expenditure monitoring and cost allocation, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
  • Oversee the financial administration and refinancing of the Country Office, including medium-term financial planning and compliance with relevant financial and administrative standards
  • Monitor the financial management of partner organisations, review partner agreements and strengthen partners’ financial management capacities where required
  • Coordinate annual accounts, audits and financial reviews and ensure the timely implementation and follow-up of audit recommendations
  • Support donor financial management, including financial reports, fund requests, project modifications and extensions, and liaise with donors, auditors and other relevant stakeholders
  • Lead and develop the Finance and Administration team and coordinate financial management training for Welthungerhilfe and partner staff

Your profile

  • A university degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics or another relevant field
  • 5–10 years of relevant professional experience, ideally in financial management roles within an international NGO or comparable organisation
  • Strong experience in project financial management, budgeting, financial reporting and financial controls
  • Sound knowledge of donor regulations, compliance requirements and audit processes
  • Experience working with and providing financial guidance to projects and partner organisations
  • Strong analytical, organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Strong communication and cooperation skills and the ability to advise colleagues across different functions and levels of responsibility
  • High level of intercultural competence and confidence working in an international environment
  • You recognize the growing value of data within an organization and inspire teams to make decisions grounded in analysis and evidence
  • Readiness to receive the necessary vaccinations to work in our country offices.
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally, including within Syria, Türkiye and Lebanon, where required\
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of German, Turkish or Arabic would be an advantage
