Website Development and Digital Content Support for UN-Habitat Myanmar

Mission and objectives

UN-Habitat Myanmar works to improve people’s living conditions by supporting safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable human settlements. At the heart of its work is the People’s Process, which gives communities an active role in identifying their needs, shaping solutions, and taking part in implementation. Its main areas of work include adequate housing, water and sanitation, basic services, community infrastructure, urban and regional planning, climate adaptation, environmental resilience, disaster risk reduction, and post-disaster recovery. UN-Habitat also strengthens local and institutional capacity, supports better policies and planning, promotes knowledge sharing and practical innovation, and builds partnerships with communities, civil society, professional institutions, and development and humanitarian partners. Through this approach, the organization aims not only to respond to immediate needs but also to help communities become stronger, more self-reliant, and better prepared for future challenges. UN-Habitat Myanmar advances climate adaptation and nature-based solutions for sustainable and resilient human settlements. In 2023, it established the Myanmar Climate Action Network (M-CAN) for knowledge exchange and collective action and has since organized Myanmar Climate Action Week annually. M-CAN is a network of more than 180 non-state climate actors in Myanmar who have voluntarily committed to addressing climate challenges by moving beyond climate discourse to climate action and advocating for these actions. Mission: Advocate, promote, and undertake climate actions in Myanmar through partnerships, knowledge generation and dissemination, experience sharing, and innovation. Context

UN-Habitat Myanmar uses digital platforms to share information on sustainable urban development, climate action, disaster resilience, projects, publications, events, partnerships and knowledge products. To strengthen digital communication and knowledge sharing, there is a need to improve website structure, user experience, content management and technical functionality. The UN-Habitat Myanmar website and Myanmar Climate Action digital platform require continuous enhancement through WordPress template development, digital content support, interactive web features, data dashboards, web maps, AI-enabled solutions and automation tools. The Online Volunteer will support the improvement and maintenance of these platforms by contributing technical expertise in WordPress development, website design, digital content management, data visualization integration and emerging digital tools.

Task Description

We are looking for 2 experienced Online Volunteers who, under the supervision of UN-Habitat Myanmar, will support WordPress template development, website enhancement, digital content management, AI-enabled solutions, automation, web mapping and data dashboard integration for UN-Habitat Myanmar and the Myanmar Climate Action digital platforms. The assignment will contribute to improving the structure, accessibility, usability and digital presentation of web platforms used for sharing programme information, climate action initiatives, projects, publications, news, events, knowledge products and stakeholder engagement activities. UN-Habitat will provide available website information, existing content, digital assets, branding guidance and technical requirements. Online Volunteers will not be expected to access restricted internal systems, confidential databases or modify live websites without authorization. At the beginning of the assignment, they will review the existing website structure, technical environment and priority improvements with the UN-Habitat focal point and agree on expected outputs. Main tasks Working under the guidance of the UN-Habitat Myanmar focal point and designated technical coordinators, Online Volunteers will:

• Participate in an initial online orientation covering assignment objectives, existing website structure, WordPress environment, content management requirements, visual identity guidance, technical priorities and expected outputs.
• Review the existing website structure, page organization, navigation system, content categories, templates, plugins and overall user experience to identify improvement opportunities.
• Assess existing WordPress themes, templates, plugins and website components and provide recommendations for improved functionality, responsiveness and maintainability.
• Support the design and development of WordPress templates, page layouts and reusable website components aligned with UN-Habitat branding and communication requirements.
• Develop or customize WordPress templates and pages, including project pages, publication pages, news articles, event pages, multimedia sections, partner information pages and other required website components.
• Improve website information architecture, including menus, categories, tags, page hierarchy and internal linking to enhance accessibility and user experience.
• Support the integration and presentation of digital resources, including reports, publications, images, videos, maps, dashboards and other knowledge products.
• Support integration of interactive web maps, GIS-based visualizations and data dashboards into website pages using suitable platforms, embed functions or web-compatible formats.
• Assist in developing website-based data visualization features, including interactive charts, maps, dashboards, filters and other tools to improve access to programme and climate action information.
• Explore and support the use of appropriate AI tools and automation solutions for website content management, workflow improvement, knowledge organization, search functions, content assistance and other agreed digital processes.
• Support configuration and customization of WordPress features, plugins and digital tools required for website operation, including media management, forms, search functions, content display and automation workflows.
• Ensure website pages and digital products are responsive and compatible across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
• Conduct basic testing of website functions, including browser compatibility, page display, links, interactive features and user experience.
• Support basic website performance improvements, including image optimization, content organization, loading performance and usability enhancements.
• Assist in uploading, formatting and organizing web content, including project updates, news, publications, reports, events and multimedia materials.
• Support application of good digital communication practices, including clear formatting, headings, metadata, image descriptions, accessibility features and consistent presentation.
• Coordinate with programme teams and communication focal points to ensure that website content is accurate, clear and aligned with approved communication messages.
• Prepare basic technical documentation, including guidance on updating content, managing media, maintaining templates, refreshing dashboards and managing integrated digital tools.
• Provide knowledge transfer and practical support to UN-Habitat focal points to strengthen future website management and digital content updates.
• Provide progress updates through agreed reporting mechanisms and participate in virtual coordination meetings to review progress and address technical issues.
• Participate in a final handover session to present completed outputs, explain technical changes and provide recommendations for future improvements. Working arrangements The assignment will be implemented remotely. Communication with UN-Habitat Myanmar and designated coordinators will take place through email, virtual meetings and agreed online collaboration platforms. Online Volunteers may work individually on assigned components while coordinating closely with each other and the UN-Habitat focal point. Tasks may be divided according to technical strengths, including WordPress development, front-end improvement, content management, AI and automation solutions, web mapping, dashboard integration, testing and documentation. UN-Habitat Myanmar will provide available website information, content materials, branding guidance and technical requirements. Online Volunteers will not be expected to access restricted internal systems, modify confidential databases or make unauthorized changes to live websites. Volunteers may support website customization, coding, content organization, digital tool integration, testing and documentation necessary to complete agreed outputs. Major system redesign, advanced software development or infrastructure changes are not expected unless specifically agreed. All public-facing content and technical updates will remain subject to review and approval by UN-Habitat Myanmar before publication. Volunteers will not independently represent UN-Habitat or publish official information without authorization. The assignment will include an initial orientation and periodic technical coordination throughout the 12-week period. Activities can generally be undertaken flexibly within the agreed workload of 16–20 hours per week. Expected outputs Each Online Volunteer is expected to contribute to an agreed combination of the following outputs: - Participation in the initial orientation and technical coordination activities. - Review of the existing website structure, WordPress environment, templates, plugins and content organization. - Recommendations for website improvements, including user experience, accessibility, digital tools and technical enhancements. - Development or customization of WordPress templates, layouts and reusable website components. - Improved website pages supporting presentation of projects, publications, news, events, multimedia and knowledge products. - Integration of web maps, interactive dashboards, charts or other data visualization products into website pages where required. - Support for AI-enabled tools and automation solutions to improve website workflows, content management and digital engagement. - Organized website content, media files and digital resources following agreed structures and guidelines. - Basic testing results and recommendations covering responsiveness, accessibility, functionality and user experience. - Technical documentation, knowledge transfer and final handover guidance for future website maintenance and updates. The overall contribution of the Online Volunteer team will help strengthen UN-Habitat Myanmar’s digital communication systems, improve access to urban development and climate action knowledge, and enhance stakeholder engagement through accessible, interactive and sustainable web platforms.
