Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in Eritrea. The RCO supports the Resident Coordinator in leading and coordinating the work of the United Nations Country Team and advancing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and new UNSDCF 2027-2031. The Communications and Storytelling Intern will support the communications function of the RCO and the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) in strengthening the visibility of United Nations priorities, partnerships and results in Eritrea. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer and the overall guidance of the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office. Responsibilities:
  • Source and develop human-interest stories, results stories and other editorial content from United Nations entities and joint initiatives;
  • Draft and edit web stories, newsletter content, social media copy, briefing notes and other communications products;
  • Adapt approved content for publication on the United Nations in Eritrea website and digital platforms; support regular updates of UN web-site.
  • Support content planning for international days, campaigns, events and joint United Nations initiatives;
  • Assist with the management of LinkedIn and Instagram platforms, including content scheduling and preparation of draft posts;
  • Coordinate with UNCG focal points to collect information, photographs and communications materials;
  • Support communications activities related to coordination mechanisms, including the UN-Ministry of Information (MOI) Task Force;
  • Assist with event communications, documentation and visibility materials;
  • Maintain content archives and communications repositories; and
  • Perform other communications-related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, Digital Communications, International Relations, Development Studies, English, or another closely related field.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of Arabic would be desirable.
