The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
 
Supervision
  • The intern will report to the Programme Coordinator within the Migration Policy and Data Unit, and will work closely with the wider programme team, collaborating on day-to-day tasks as outlined in the Learning Objectives.

Learning Objectives
  • Support the Programme Coordinator in implementing activities of the Migration Policy and Data Unit, including providing logistical and administrative support for unit events and initiatives;
  • Assist with the day-to-day operational activities of the Unit in coordination with Unit staff;
  • Attend internal meetings, as requested, and contribute to discussions related to IOM’s operational activities;
  • Liaise and communicate with IOM partners on activities relevant to the Unit’s work;
  • Support the preparation of situational updates, statistical reports, and other programme-related documentation, as assigned; and
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned by the supervisor.

Training Components and Learning Elements
  • The Intern will gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations System.
  • Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities;
  • Gain a better understanding of the International Organization for Migration (IOM’s) work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, and work on formulating and editing institutional strategies, priorities and workplans;
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Current university student in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree or recent graduate (within one year), or enrolled in a Master’s degree in Law, International Relations, Migration Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field; and,
  • Coursework or academic focus in migration law, public policy, or international legal frameworks is an asset.

Experience

  • Previous academic or professional experience in migration-related issues, legal frameworks, or policy analysis is desirable;
  • Experience in project management, research, or supporting programme implementation is an advantage;
  • Experience working with international organizations, governmental institutions, or NGOs is beneficial; and,
    Familiarity with migration laws, administrative procedures, or regulatory systems is considered an asset.

Skills

  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Good interpersonal and communication abilities;
  • Good knowledge of MS Office;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and maintain a professional attitude;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills;
  • Adequate knowledge of the broad range of migration-related subject areas dealt with by the Organization; and,
  • Working knowledge of UN and bilateral donor programming.

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English language is required. Working knowledge of Kyrgyz and Russian languages is desired.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
