26-24 AI & Full-Stack Development Intern

The International Potato Center (CIP) is looking for one (1) AI & Full-Stack Development Intern to provide support to Digital & Data Department in Lima, Peru.

 Training activities:

• Contribute to building features of a native Windows desktop client written in Rust (GPUI): panels, editing surfaces, streaming views, settings, and diagnostics.
  
• Support the implementation of document handling and format fidelity: .docx, Markdown, and LaTeX, citations and bibliography, typesetting pipelines, and faithful round-trips between formats.
  
• Contribute to extending a Python 3.12 multi-agent backend built on LangGraph and LangChain and the surfaces through which researchers invoke it and receive its results.
  
• Support the completion of the move to a self-contained Windows installation, so the application installs and runs like any other Windows program.
  
• Contribute to applied LLM engineering activities, including prompt and model routing, retrieval-augmented generation over researchers' PDF libraries, guardrails, and evaluation of agent output.
  
• Support the extension and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines on GitHub Actions and the automated test suites.
  
• ​Document the work and collaborate with research teams across CGIAR.
  

Requirements

What are we looking for?

• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  
• Ranked in the upper third of their faculty (mandatory requirement). 
  

 Technical skills:

• Strong programming skills in Python and TypeScript.
  
• Knowledge of Rust, or solid experience in another systems language (C++, Go, or C#) together with a demonstrated ability to learn new languages quickly. (The desktop client is written in Rust and is a substantial part of the codebase.)
  
• Demonstrated experience developing full-stack applications through academic, personal, internship, or professional projects (APIs, persistence, frontend, authentication).
  
• Familiarity with Git, code review, testing, and CI/CD practices.
  
• Comfortable targeting Windows as a platform (PowerShell, native packaging), not only Linux or macOS.
  
• Ability to document work clearly and follow structured development processes.
  
• Awareness of responsible AI use: validation by subject-matter experts, no confidential data in prompts, and disclosure of AI assistance.
  
• Proficiency in English and Spanish.
  

Desirable:

• UX design skills: interaction and interface design, onboarding, information hierarchy, and accessibility. The users are scientists, not engineers.
  
• Knowledge  with structured document formats and editing: document models, editor frameworks, OOXML/.docx, LaTeX, Markdown, or typesetting pipelines such as Pandoc or Typst.
  
• Hands-on experience writing Rust in a real project, or familiarity with GPUI or another native UI framework.
  
• Knowledge  with LLM or agent frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent), RAG, or prompt evaluation.
  
• Scientific Python (pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels) and interest in research data.
