Women’s economic empowerment is one of the strategic priorities for UN Women in the Asia-Pacific region. Many international commitments support women’s economic empowerment, including the Beijing Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and a series of International Labour Organization conventions on gender equality. UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) supports women’s economic empowerment in line with these normative frameworks. 

Within this scope, Regional Programmes regularly develop impact stories, news materials, and other web-related information and web-based digital content to be featured on the regional UN Women Asia-Pacific website to showcase UN Women Asia-Pacific Programme Pillar’s initiatives and their impact on women’s lives. The programmes also produce newsletters throughout the year to inform stakeholders of programmes-related activities. 

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work

Working under the supervision of UN Women Regional Communications Specialist, the consultant will be responsible for updating UN Women Regional Programme, Joint Programme and Country Offices website pages with content and information as well as developing specific web-based projects and relevant digital content management system of UN Women and its approved web applications.

The consultant will work closely with the Regional Programmes and Country Offices or project leads to perform the following tasks:

  • Conceptualize, develop and maintain webpages and web-based digital content for the EmPower project (subsumed under UN Women Asia-Pacific website).
  • Plan and design high-quality, innovative and attention-grabbing web-based digital content for online dissemination to promote UN Women visibility on websites and web pages.
  • Modify, revise and edit webpage assets, layouts, diagrams and network documentation as required by and in consultation with relevant Regional Programme staff.
  • Provide support in managing UN Women Asia Pacific video channel and photo gallery on Youtube and Flickr 
  • Generate information on website analytics for monthly monitoring and reporting.
  • Recommends website visibility best practices for the programme and its campaigns and events.
  • Support full website migration of UN Women Asia and the Pacific on Drupal. 
  • Support full website migration of UN Women Asia and the Pacific on Drupal as the back stopper.   
  • Support at maximum five Zoom virtual meetings for Regional Programme for the period of one year 
  • Provide ICT client support to Regional Programmes.
  • Provide network-related troubleshooting. 
  • Backstopping web administration function for UN Women Asia and the Pacific Regional Office. 
  • Backstopping web administration function for UN Women Pacific Multi-Country Office. 
  • Provide on-site support of IT functions to Programme teams on behalf of Regional Communications Unit.

The consultant should:

  • Follow closely UN Women branding guidelines as well as other UN Women corporate and donors visibility tools.
  • Utilize approved corporate branding, colour and theme for all materials produced. 
  • Explore and propose ways to convey information through innovative methods.
  • Ensure messages are positive, empowering and reflect the programme’s vision;
  • Acknowledge that UN Women has non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity of all webpage material and related digital content.

Final products and expected output

Under the overall guidance of the Regional Director and reporting directly to the Regional Communications Specialist, the consultant is responsible for the following:

  • Editing, revising and rewriting as needed and formatting to produce high quality, reader-friendly, accessible, timely, results-based donor reports, impactful human-interest articles, programme and corporate communications materials and policy research reports and other documents and materials aligned with UN Women's established standards and formats, and in compliance with the RO's clearance, routing process and strictly with the attached annexes.
  • Preparing specific report-related feedback to relevant UN Women offices for improvements of quality.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Tasks and expected output (not limited to)

  • Web-based human-interest articles for public and media dissemination
  • Web feature articles from regional programmes and for donors’ relations purposes 
  • Donor reportsand other documents and materials thatreflect high quality, result- based standard and format established by UN Women
  • Illustrated annual reports, reflect high quality, result- based standard and format established by UN Women 
  • Knowledge products and materials for web and social media dissemination 

Duration of Assignment and Duty Station

From 1 June 2026 – 31 May 2029 (Maximum 200 days of assignment period; UN Women does not warrant that the maximum of 200 days. The service will be purchased during the term of the Agreement). The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the consultant depending on need and availability within the contract period for a pre­ agreed fee.

Education and Certification:

  • Master's degree in social sciences, international development, and/or communications, and other relevant field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of high-level experience in writing, editing, reporting, and communicating complex programmatic information in reader-friendly formats and styles.
  • Demonstrated abilities and track record writing high quality English-language reports and information.
  • Excellent understanding of and experience with gender-sensitive and results-based management and reporting.
  • Understanding of international development, resource mobilization, and the UN context is an asset.
  • Must be capable of effectively using MS Word, Excel and Acrobat Reader for copy-editing work especially when reviewing documents using track change functions.

Languages:

Fluency in written and oral English is required
