Background:
Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates the efforts of the United Nations system to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. UN Women provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
Women’s economic empowerment is one of the strategic priorities for UN Women in the Asia-Pacific region. Many international commitments support women’s economic empowerment, including the Beijing Platform for Action, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and a series of International Labour Organization conventions on gender equality. UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) supports women’s economic empowerment in line with these normative frameworks.
Within this scope, Regional Programmes regularly develop impact stories, news materials, and other web-related information and web-based digital content to be featured on the regional UN Women Asia-Pacific website to showcase UN Women Asia-Pacific Programme Pillar’s initiatives and their impact on women’s lives. The programmes also produce newsletters throughout the year to inform stakeholders of programmes-related activities.
