Result of Service
Expected tangible and measurable tasks(s): A. Copyediting of 1 bulletin on waste trafficking (trendspotting alert); B. Finalize content/copyediting version of 4 web stories on waste trafficking activities; C. Copyediting version of national checklist on waste importation rules and procedure for 3 focus countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand); D. Finalization of 4 country-specific (Indonesia, Malaysia, Viet Nam, and Thailand) training materials.

Duties and Responsibilities
Specific tasks to be performed by the Individual Contractor: Under the supervision of Programme Coordinator of Project WasteNet, the individual contractor will perform the following tasks: • content/copy-edit texts of specialized or technical nature in relation to waste trafficking. This will include editing approximately 13 documents that are to be published during 2026 (approximately 156 pages). • Draft web-stories/articles to be published on the UNODC global and regional website based on information provided by the UNODC team with a specific focus on environmental crimes. This will include drafting and editing approximately 4 web-stories that are to be published during 2023 (approximately 4 pages). • Ensure accuracy, clarity, and conformity with UNODC standards, policy, writing style guide and practice. • Evaluate text for consistency and appropriate use of particular UN vocabulary, actively scanning for and identifying sensitivities (diplomatic and other) that may require special consideration and/or revision. • Coordinate with project team members to clearly and effectively develop and articulate content ideas according to the publication’s style and UNODC’s editorial guidelines as found in past publications. • When required, coordinate with UNODC graphic designer to import Word documents into InDesign and/or Canva, creating tables and graphics and ensuring the appropriate formatting and allocation of space for text, photos, and other illustrations such as data-visualizations that make up report content. • Ensure the materials meets the highest standard of English writing and UNODC editorial standards. • Ensure the correctness of context, content, and terminologies. • Provide constructive feedback to improve product quality throughout the editorial process. • Actively liaising with project team members to present information in a clear, concise, and strategic way. • In consultation with the authors of the report, draft communication products related to the publications to summarize key messages and findings.
Qualifications/special skills
Academic qualifications High school diploma or equivalent is required. A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in writing, editing, proofreading, and publishing is required. Professional training in journalism or editing is required. Excellent drafting skills are required. Experience working with UN editorial guidelines is desirable. Experience with writing for the UN or other international organizations, preferably on topics of UNODC’s mandate, is desirable. Experience or familiarity with legal and technical terms related to criminal justice and crimes that affect the environment is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English, with excellent drafting and communication skills, is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage.
