Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of the UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities. The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 500 banks, insurers and investors. For over 34 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP FI convenes the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), a unique framework for ensuring that signatory banks’ strategy and practice align with the vision society has set out for its future in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. Over 330 banks have now signed the PRB to make a positive contribution to people and the planet. These banks represent more than half of the global banking industry. UNEP FI also convenes insurers that are signatories to the Principles for Sustainable Insurance and co-hosts the Investment Leadership Programme with the Principles for Responsible Investment. UNEP FI has established a thematic area focusing on Pollution and Circular Economy. This workstream engages the financial sector and builds support on circular economy technical capabilities, and helps financial institutions address pollution risks such as plastics and chemical pollution. It also collaborates with GACERE, the Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency – which is an alliance of governments supported by UNEP – to develop and disseminate knowledge products on financing the circular economy transition which target policy makers, multilateral banks and other financial institutions. UNEP FI is also co-developing with the International Resource Panel (IRP), a science-policy platform on the sustainable use of natural resources, a summary for financial institutions based on the IRP global report on ‘Financing the responsible supply of energy transition minerals for Sustainable Development’. The UNEP FI Pollution and Policy Team needs a consultant to assist with editing services. Objectives: After providing editing and proofreading services for four guidance publications related to Pollution and Circular Economy; heavy copyediting and proofreading, for a guidance document co-developed by UNEP-FI and GACERE, titled ‘the GACERE-UNEP FI guidance document titled ‘Unlocking Circular Economy Financing: From Vision to Action’; and for the Latin America & Caribbean Common Taxonomy for Biodiversity. Specific tasks and responsibilities: The consultant will: • Provide proofreading and light editing for 2 sectoral circular economy financing guidelines for buildings and construction, and minerals and metals. • Deliver proofreading and light editing for a summary for financial institutions of the International Resource Panel report ‘Financing the Responsible Supply of Energy Transition Minerals for Sustainable Development’. • Deliver additional copyediting and proofreading services for the Latin America & Caribbean Common Taxonomy for Biodiversity (Policy Team). Outputs and Deliverables: • sectoral circular economy financing guidelines for buildings and construction, and minerals and metals. • A summary for financial institutions of the International Resource Panel report ‘Financing the Responsible Supply of Energy Transition Minerals for Sustainable Development’ • Latin America & Caribbean Common Taxonomy for Biodiversity (Policy Team). The consultant will report to the Head of UNEP FI as the overall supervisor, with direct supervision from the Pollution and Circular Economy Lead and the Latin America & Caribbean Policy Lead, UNEP FI, while working in close coordination with the LAC Common Taxonomy Framework for Biodiversity Team.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: A master’s degree in communications, marketing, PR, media, international relations, business, event management, Administration, public relations or a related field is required. A bachelor’s degree may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, provided the candidate has 7 years of experience. Professional Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience, especially in communications in the financial services sector, or at NGOs, academic organizations, standard-setting bodies, public agencies focused on sustainability and regulation for the financial sector is required.
Languages
Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
Additional Information
Skills & Knowledge: Experience in communications related to corporate responsibility and sustainable finance. Track record of working with initiatives of the financial industry, such as the Principles for Responsible Banking or the Principles for Responsible Insurance is highly desired. Extensive experience interacting with and relating to finance professionals, and international stakeholders at senior level. Team player with strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong internal relationships and networks. Motivated self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative and international environment.
