Job Description

The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU), Legal Department, Operational Policy, Mandates and Non-EU Operations (OPS-POL), Restructuring, Funds and Venture Debt Division (RFV), Venture Debt Unit (VD), at its headquarters in Luxembourg, an - Associate Venture Debt Lawyer*

This is a full-time position at grade 4 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Panel interviews are anticipated for the beginning of May 2026.

Purpose

The Restructuring, Funds and Venture Debt Division (RFV), deals with the legal documentation and legal issues for Venture Debt, as well as debt restructuring and fund investments.

This position would be for the Venture Debt Unit. Venture Debt finances the growth stage of innovative companies across the EU. As an (Associate) Venture Debt Lawyer, you will assist the Head of Division and the Head of Unit together with other lawyers, in providing legal support to the operational Directorates and carrying out work relating to tasks within the Venture Debt Unit’s remit. This involves legal work both on loan agreements and equity upside arrangements such as warrants, profit participation schemes and royalty arrangements.

Operating Network

You will act under the authority of the Head of Division and the Head of Unit, in cooperation with the other lawyers of the Division and in accordance with the priorities established by the Head of Division and the Head of Unit (in coordination with the Head of Department).

The post may involve a certain amount of travel for negotiations and signatures of legal documentation and contracts.

Accountabilities

  • With appropriate supervision, manage contacts and negotiations concerning the EIB operations handled by the Unit and the Division, working with documents subject to numerous jurisdictions and with counterparts in several countries in autonomy (and with internal counterparts in several different areas of the Bank).
  • Draft documents, provide advisory legal support, finalise contracts, complete all related legal formalities and legal monitoring (including post-signature events, such as waivers and amendments), often with the assistance of external counsel.
  • Prepare terms of reference for external counsel and other consultants, liaise and supervise their work, whenever necessary.
  • Contribute to the formulation of legal policies in the area of activity of the Unit and of the Division and make recommendations for the implementation of new methods and procedures within your area of expertise.
  • Develop standard legal documentation for the Venture Debt operations and share knowledge on legal documentation for the Bank’s products within the Directorate.
  • Conduct research on legal matters in Venture Debt transactions or activities.
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with other directorates within the Bank.
  • Follow the internal approval processes relating to the transactions assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) in law. Professional legal qualification in a civil or common law jurisdiction.
  • At least 3 years of relevant, professional experience, preferably in the field of banking and finance acquired with a firm of international repute or the in-house department of a financial institution.
  • Significant experience in the drafting and negotiation of finance documentation in English. Experience in working in French and/or German will be an asset.
  • Solid experience in the area of structured finance and/or venture debt would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple files at the same time.
  • Very good knowledge of the standard computer tools.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French(***), with a good knowledge of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages will be an advantage.

(***) Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre-requisite for hire. As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
