Mission and objectives

UNEP Finance Initiative brings together a large network of banks, insurers and investors that catalyses action across the financial system to deliver more sustainable global economies. For more than 30 years the initiative has been connecting the UN with financial institutions from around the world to shape the sustainable finance agenda. We’ve established the world’s foremost sustainability frameworks, helping the finance industry achieve sustainability goals, address sustainability risks and identify the business opportunities in taking a responsible approach to banking and insurance. Convened by a Geneva, Switzerland-based secretariat, more than 500 banks and insurers with assets exceeding US$170 trillion are individually implementing UNEP FI’s Principles for Responsible Banking and Principles for Sustainable Insurance. Financial institutions work with UNEP FI on a voluntary basis and we help them to apply the industry frameworks and develop practical guidance and tools to position their businesses for the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy. Founded in 1992, UNEP FI was the first organisation to engage the finance sector on sustainability and incubated the Principles for Responsible Investment, now the world’s leading proponent of responsible investment. Today, we cultivate leadership and advance sustainable market practice while supporting the implementation of global programmes at a regional level across Africa & the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean and North America.

Context

UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) aims to upskill finance professionals worldwide to integrate sustainability issues into decision-making and day-to-day activities through a wide range of learning and development initiatives. These activities support financial institutions in managing sustainability risks and opportunities and contribute to the achievement of global sustainability goals. Within this context, UNEP FI offers several trainings focused on sustainability risk management, including the Climate Change: Risk Management in the Banking Sector online course. The course supports banks in strengthening their capacity to identify, assess and manage climate-related risks and is part of UNEP FI’s broader learning and development programme. Originally developed by UNEP FI in 2007 and updated in 2018, the course materials were subsequently updated and translated into Spanish and French in 2020 with the support of the Sustainability Academy—an initiative of the eco.business Fund Development Facility—and CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. The course was updated again in 2025 to reflect the latest developments in climate risk management and sustainable finance, and the materials were translated into Spanish and French to ensure accessibility for a global and diverse audience. To ensure the quality and consistency of the Spanish version, UNEP FI is seeking an Online Volunteer to review the English-to-Spanish translation. The volunteer’s contribution will help ensure that Spanish-speaking finance professionals can fully benefit from the course content, thereby supporting UNEP FI’s objective of delivering high-quality, globally accessible training that advances responsible banking and climate risk management practices.
