Mission and objectives
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the UN’s sexual and reproductive health agency, mandated by the UN General Assembly to ensure every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person's potential is fulfilled. It works in over 150 countries to achieve three transformative results by 2030: zero unmet need for contraception, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence. UNFPA’s work is grounded in the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The core mandate includes: Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights: Promoting universal access to reproductive health, including family planning, maternal health, and HIV prevention. Gender Equality: Ending gender-based violence (GBV), harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM), and empowering women and girls. Youth Empowerment: Supporting adolescents and youth to transition healthily into adulthood and reach their potential. Population Data: Assisting countries in collecting, analyzing, and using demographic data for development planning, including census support.Context
