Organizational Context
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The JPO under the direct supervision of the Country Representative will be supporting the coordination and programme support functions of the Nepal Country Office (NCO) by assisting in strengthening strategic partnerships and coordination for GEWE within the UN System and with external partners, including government and development partners. This shall be done by contributing to and supporting the following initiatives on Coordination.
JPO Programme Components
Content and methodology of supervision:
Establishment of a Work Plan: During the first month of the assignment, the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will work jointly with the direct supervisor to finalize an agreed upon work plan. The final work plan will be discussed and mutually agreed to by the JPO and supervisor
Evaluation:
The Performance Management and Development (PMD) tool will serve as a primary platform to evaluate of the JPO’s performance.
Training components:
- Participation in a UN Women Induction Course in New York or remotely if applicable.
- UN Women mandatory online training courses
- Access to online training and learning resources of the Learning Management System to develop management skills as well as knowledge in specific technical areas in line with the individual learning plan developed annually with the supervisor
- Use of yearly JPO duty-related travel and training allocation (DTTA), as per the online DTTA guide
Learning components:
On completion of the assignment, the JPO will have/be able to analyze policies and plans from a gender equality perspective; gained solid understanding of UN coordination structures and systems in both the development and humanitarian spheres; gained strengthened programme planning, coordination and management skills; learnt to identify strategic opportunities for coordinated advocacy and gained the ability to develop and implement plans to realize these opportunities.
In addition to strengthening of UN Women competencies skills set, in particular those listed below, the JPO will also learn/acquire some of the following:
- Develop in-depth knowledge of UN Women's work in Nepal and beyond
- Develop a strong ability to develop and strengthen partnerships across a broad range of partners, including government, development partners, UN agencies, civil society organizations
- Gain ability to prepare quality knowledge products including briefs, concept notes and talking points
Develop skills in coordination, advocacy and strategic planning - Apply corporate programme/project and resource management tools and methods;
Access on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities - Participate in a range of interagency meetings (LNOB GESI Working Group, IDPG GESI Working Group, OMT etc.) and represent UN Women at these levels.
Functions
Strengthen partnerships
- Manage and coordinate relationships with key partners, including government, civil society, private sector, and donors.
- Provide inputs to the Country Representative/Deputy Representative to forge and implement strategic partnerships.
- Support engagement with bilateral and multilateral donors, including preparation of briefing notes, concept notes, and partner intelligence.
- Provide regular updates on donor profiles, databases, and partnership opportunities
Support resource mobilization efforts
- Contribute to the design and implementation of resource mobilization strategies aligned with country-level priorities.
- Draft and package proposals, concept notes, and funding submissions.
- Assist in identifying funding opportunities and prepare analytical briefs on donor trends.
- Support coordination of timely, high-quality donor reporting in collaboration with programme and monitoring staff.
Provide support to inter-agency coordination
- Prepare briefing materials for participation in UN inter-agency processes and meetings.
- Provide technical inputs on gender perspectives in UN joint programming and other inter-agency initiatives.
Support UNCT monitoring and reporting on gender equality results. - Provide technical inputs to UN inter-agency coordination processes (UNCT, joint programmes, thematic groups).
- Support organization and documentation of coordination meetings and consultations.
Contribute to advocacy and communication
- Support the implementation of advocacy and communication campaigns on GEWE, including international observances and global initiatives.
- Draft advocacy products and manage content for social media and web platforms in coordination with communication staff.
- Provide inputs to speeches, talking points, and presentations for high-level meetings.

Education and certification:
- Master’s degree or equivalent in social sciences, human rights, gender/women's studies, international development, or a related field is required
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A project/programme management certification (such as PMP®, PRINCE2®, or MSP®) would be an added advantage
Experience:
- At least 2 years (with MA) or 4 years (with BA) of progressively responsible work experience in development programme/project implementation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting and capacity building;
- Experience in working on women’s leadership and governance system will be an asset;
- Experience in the Partnership, Coordination and Resource Mobilization is an asset;
- Experience coordinating and liaising with government agencies and/or donors is an asset.
- Prior experience of working with a UN or INGOs will be an asset.
- Experience in administrative systems and UN system norms is an asset; Experience in working independently with minimal supervision
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English is required
- Knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
