Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Resident Coordinators Office (UN RCO) in Malaysia undertakes a series of analytical and research efforts on an ongoing basis to support the work of the wider UN Country Team (UNCT) and build partnerships with the government and other stakeholders. This assignment is specified to support to five such efforts, focused on socioeconomic issues, during 2026, as listed in this TOR (see below). It is noted but these may be varied/ substituted with tasks of similar difficulty and duration, with the consent of the consultant and the UN RCO. The aim of this assignment is to deliver, under the supervision of the RCO Senior Economist, five tasks: 1) Update of the UN/ PSN SDG tracking exercise for Malaysia; compiling new SDG data and revised targets, and then undertaking analyses to determine if targets are on/ off track. 2) Undertake sub-national analysis of SDG progress, specifically at state-level; synthesising targets based on two methodological approaches, compilation of data, and assessment of progress on/ off- track, initially for 3 to 4 states/ territories, and potentially later all areas. 3) Enable completion of research using the Modelling tool for Malaysia (MMT) assessing the impacts of US trade tariffs for Malaysia (supporting data analysis). 4) Assist with compilation of data and analysis for a new study on the number and economic role played by migrants. This would include working with an estimation methodology for undocumented migrants, and use of MMT to value economic contribution. 5) Further support the identification and resolution of data gaps on disability issues and finding solutions (building on past work, as required).
Qualifications/special skills
- Master's Degree in statistics, econometrics, or other quantitative field of study is required. - At least 3 years relevant work experience of similar tasks. - Experience of working on social science/ policy research topics - Statistical/ data science skills, specifically including regression and correlation techniques. - Strong knowledge of the Malaysian context.
Languages
Fluency in English and Malay is required.
