Job Description

Mission and objectives

The mission of WHO's Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) Programme (WHE) within the WHO Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks and, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain outbreaks and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations. In WHO AFRO’s Emergency Preparedness (EMP) area of work, the mission is to build Member States’ capacities to prevent, detect early, and respond rapidly to public‑health emergencies, and to lead and coordinate international action when national capacities are overwhelmed. Core objectives include: strengthening IHR (2005) implementation and national readiness (e.g., NAPHS, contingency and business‑continuity plans); developing tools and SOPs for risk assessment, early warning/surveillance, and operational readiness; supporting multi‑hazard, all‑hazards planning; and ensuring predictable, effective, and coordinated incident management and response operations, often through standing coordination mechanisms and partner engagement.

Context

To improve the visibility, usability, and professional presentation of its reports and guidance products, the WHO AFRO EMP Team is seeking a motivated and creative Online Volunteer to support graphic design and visual communication efforts. The assignment focuses on developing a high quality report product, including ability to re-use the template / style / look and feel for future EMP, ensuring long-term value for the team. The volunteer will work closely with AFRO communication focal points to ensure all design work aligns with WHO standards and meets the needs of internal and external audiences.

Task Description

Under the supervision of the Project Lead, the Online Volunteer will: The scope of work includes: ● Produce polished design and layout for WHO Report/Guidance in alignment with WHO branding guidelines and specifications. ● Application of a clean, professional editorial design style, ensuring consistency in typography, headings, tables, and call-outs. ● Layout of all supplied content without altering the structure or logic of the text. ● Delivery of a first laid-out version for WHO review and feedback. ● Incorporation of up to two rounds of revisions based on consolidated WHO comments. ● Submission of final, publication-ready files. Finalized draft content will be supplied by WHO in editable format prior to the commencement of design. Limited new graphics, figures, or illustrations will be required as part of this assignment due to the tight timeline. Expected results 1. Print-ready and web-optimized PDF files, along with open design files as per WHO specifications
