Duties and Responsibilities
Background The Arab Centre for Climate Change Policies at ESCWA conducts geospatial analysis of climate change as part of its mandated activities under the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster. This work includes coordinating the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR), which advances the use regional climate models and projections to inform science-based policy and priority-setting for climate action. The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) is collaborating with ESCWA on an Arab Climate Change Capacity Building Project to prepare and e-training program in the Arabic language based on RICCAR methodologies and regional climate modelling outputs that have been developed with the support of the Government of Sweden. Objective The consultant will contribute to the preparation of an interactive online training module on climate change that improves understanding of regional climate modelling assessment tools and their application in the Arab region. Duties and responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer and the canvas coordinator and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead, the consultant would provide the substantive content that would contribute to the development an interactive online training module in the Arabic language that improves understanding of regional climate modelling assessment tools and their application in the Arab region.
Qualifications/special skills
A master’s degree in geography, climate change, engineering or environmental science is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of five years of experience working in the area of climate change and geospatial analysis is required. Demonstrated experience working with geospatial datasets related to regional climate modelling and impact and vulnerability assessments is required. Experience working on climate change issues facing Arab States is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
