VN 26/31 Data Processing System Engineer

Within the Satellite System Ground Segments Division (SGS) of the Technical and Scientific Support Department (TSS), the post holder will contribute to the development of future data processing systems within the Data Processing team supporting Spacecraft and High Level Production data of Meteosat, Metop, Sentinel and Jason satellite series operating on different orbits to provide a wide range of information needed by weather forecaster, climate scientist and other data users.

The Data Processing team is composed of very skilled and talented people that are dealing with the latest technologies (current and future state of the art) applicable for data processing systems in space activities. The team will face and resolve very challenging projects where thinking out of the box is essential and bringing innovative ideas is mandatory.

Duties

  • Develop and maintain requirements and conceptual designs (including the use of trade-offs and criteria of merit) for future EUMETSAT near-real time satellite data processing systems; this has to take into account the evolution of future Ground Segments to a multi-mission approach for reducing costs and complexity by sharing infrastructure, tools and expertise across multiple missions;
  • Contribute and follow-up the related developments/procurements and its integration/verification inside full scale Data Processing Systems and/or Ground Segments; this has to leverage on latest technologies to ensure higher performance, improved maintainability, and longer system lifespan while reducing integration risks and future obsolescence.
  • Contribute to the corrective and evolutive maintenance of the data processing system functions of the operational systems;
  • Generation of a plan for Data Processing products covering its development, launching, maintenance and the transition from development to operations;
  • Perform the follow-on coordination of data processing products, including the definition of product roadmaps for future evolutions, coordination and communication with main stakeholders covering also collection of feedback; this includes to keep the product up to the latest state of the art of new technologies as innovation will be the key to allow a cost effective maintenance and operations, bringing EUMETSAT to the new era of technologies and processes;
  • Support your managers and colleagues in proposing long-term plans and roadmaps to harmonise Data Processing Systems engineering, maintenance and evolutions across all satellite systems exploited by EUMETSAT.

QUALIFICATIONS

A university degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software or Systems Engineering discipline.

LANGUAGES

Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in engineering of Data Processing Systems or Products following well established processes, covering the analysis, design, development, integration and maintenance of large scale of software systems throughout the life cycle in operational, high availability ad time critical environments using relevant technical standards (e.g. ECSS, CCSDS, OGC with Agile development methodologies);
  • Proven and solid experience in the engineering processes for managing requirements from the definition phase through the maintenance phase, including traceability, verification and validation using formal methods and tools (e.g. DOORs, Dimensions);
  • Competence in the area of Data Processing Systems Verification &Validation (V&V) activities, including automated testing, software testing, unit test suite maintenance, software debugging and profiling;
  • Ability to manage complex tasks with minimum supervision, including planning and prioritisation of activities, allocation and coordination of resources, monitoring and reporting;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to apply these to a team environment while working within a matrix structure;
  • Experience leading/coordinating engineering teams and in the management of industrial contracts in relevant area will be considered an advantage.

Employment Conditions

The initial contract will be of 4 years’ duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of follow-up contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT.
This post is graded A2/A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 7,553 per month (net of internal tax but excluding pension contribution and insurances) which may be negotiable on the basis of skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year.
