Organizational Setting The Secretariat of the Joint FAO/World Health Organization (WHO) Codex Alimentarius Commission, which is the executive organ of the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, is located in the Joint FAO/WHO Centre (Codex Food Standards and One Health). The Secretariat is under the programmatic responsibility of the relevant Deputy Director-General and Assistant Director-General of FAO and WHO, respectively, while administratively under the supervision of the FAO Deputy Director-General of the Natural Resources and Sustainable Production Stream. The Secretariat is administered in accordance with the rules and regulations of FAO. It services the sessions of the Commission and its subsidiary bodies and acts as liaison between the Commission and interested sectors of FAO and WHO as well as the World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations and other international governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with the safety, quality and trade aspects of food standards. The position is located in the Secretariat of the Joint FAO/WHO Centre (CJWC) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy. Reporting Lines The Food Standards Officer (Data Management) reports to a Senior Food Standards Officer.
Technical Focus Support the effective and appropriate implementation of Codex meetings and the supply and distribution of information to support the work and needs of the Codex Secretariat. Key Results Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and support to programme projects, products and services. Key Functions Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services. Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents. Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems. Updates databases and web pages. Participates in multi-disciplinary project/work teams. Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc. Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.
Specific Functions Updates the Codex databases on pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, food additives, and other areas, as developed, to support the work of the relevant Codex subsidiary bodies, and ensures that the final standards developed by these bodies are ready for publication following their adoption by the Commission. Supports the preparation of technical papers and meeting reports and other related documentation for these subsidiary bodies (in particular Codex committees on food additives, pesticide residues, residues of veterinary drugs in foods, contaminants and methods of analysis and sampling). Contributes to the adoption of new technologies to support data management and data collection. Attends, on behalf of the Codex Secretariat, relevant meetings of FAO, WHO and other bodies or organizations working in the field of food standards including international expert bodies providing scientific or technical advice to the Commission. Contributes to the collation of statistical information on Codex work to support related monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the Codex Strategic Plan and other areas. Supports the provision of information and capacity development in response to requests to the Codex Secretariat from governments or other interested parties concerning food standards and related matters. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in food science, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology or veterinary or public health, science data management and/or analysis or a related field. Three years of relevant experience in supporting the development and application of food standards or food control work at national and/or international level. Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
Competencies Technical/Functional Skills Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable. Scope and depth of experience in supporting food standards development or food control in relation to food safety and quality. Extent of knowledge and experience in data management and databases and the associated technology. Extend of experience in knowledge sharing systems and continuous systems optimization. Demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Understanding of the work of the Codex Alimentarius Commission is a strong asset. Experience in an international standard setting environment. Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical documents and the writing of clear and concise reports. Extent of knowledge and/or experience on food safety and standards related terminology and concepts.
