MAIN RESPONSABILITY

JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the District Operations Manager, the Livelihoods Coordinator will lead the implementation and strengthening of SMART and climate-resilient agricultural value chains, including vegetable and mushroom production, apiculture (beekeeping), and aquaculture (fish farming), while improving market access for beneficiaries. The role will also support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and promote rural financial inclusion through Community-Based Savings Groups (CBSGs) and linkages with Microfinance Institutions.

The Livelihoods Coordinator will monitor and report program progress and build the capacity of Self-Help Groups, Village Savings and Loan Associations, and individual beneficiaries to promote sustainable livelihoods and economic self-reliance in Kayonza District

Responsibilities:

1. Climate-Smart Agricultural Development

  • Increased crop productivity, enhanced agriculture resilience
  • Promote integrated farming systems to reduce climate-related risks.

  • Digital Agronomy, based on seasonal rainfall forecasts from the national meteorological agency, and create a planting calendar that is not based on dates, but on specific rainfall triggers
  • Establish, manage, and follow up of demonstrations and model vegetable gardens at Rwinkwavu hospital

  • Train farmers in climate-smart and drought-resilient farming practices.
  • Promote water conservation techniques, soil fertility management, and sustainable land use.
  • Support farmers in adopting crops suitable for low-rainfall areas.
  • Guide communities in market-oriented production based on environmental conditions and local market demand.
  • Monitor agricultural activities to ensure productivity, quality, and profitability.

2. Community-based savings groups (CBSG)

  • Create mechanisms for accumulating Savings within Village Savings and Loan Associations (VS&LAs) for self-funding projects.
  • Training on principals of savings groups of rural based savings
  • Formalize the strategical recording of loans, savings and payback
  • Create a system that facilitates savings groups to retain members, and increase target saving per person
  • Facilitate the formation and strengthening of community savings and lending groups.
  • Mentor members in financial literacy, savings culture, and internal lending systems.
  • Support members to invest savings into viable income-generating activities.
  • Promote entrepreneurship and financial independence.

3. Lead and maintain good livestock farming practices

  • Beekeeping (apiculture): Coordinate beekeeping beneficiary projects to boost honey production and support ecosystem health.
  • Fish Farming: Manage fish farming initiatives to ensure healthy stocks and improve beneficiary nutrition and income
  • Small Livestock Rearing: Supervise small livestock projects to enhance animal health, production, and household nutrition and income.
  • Cattle Farming: Monitor cattle management to optimize cattle production and project outcomes.

4. Business Development and Project Management

  • Train beneficiaries in business planning and SMEs development.
  • Support project design, implementation, and monitoring to ensure profitability.
  • Provide mentorship in leadership and financial management, record-keeping, and risk management.
  • Ensure enterprises are sustainable and protected from avoidable losses.
  • Strengthen the scaling up and diversification of existing SMEs to ensure sustainable businesses and Income Generating Activities.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Impact Documentation

  • Responsible for tracking project activities, outputs, and outcomes.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret quantitative and qualitative data from project sites to assess effectiveness and impact.
  • Prepare periodic reports, dashboards, and summaries for management and stakeholders, highlighting key achievements and challenges.
  • Document success stories, case studies, and lessons learned to showcase project impact and support knowledge sharing.
  • Provide recommendations for project improvements based on data analysis, field observations, and beneficiary feedback.

6. Support Social Medicine In Action

  • Support the promotion of Social Medicine initiatives
  • Assist in conducting Social Medicine assessments at community level
  • Coordinate needs-based support for vulnerable households, including housing solutions.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Agriculture (Agribusiness, Crop Production, Animal Sciences, Soil, Water and Environmental Management), Rural Development, or a related field, with at least 4 years

of relevant experience working with rural communities, including smallholder farmers and vulnerable populations.

  • Bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least 8 years of relevant experience working with rural communities, including smallholder farmers and vulnerable populations.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in climate-smart agriculture and resilience-building practices
  • Understanding and knowledge of agriculture, beekeeping, fish farming, and mushroom value chains.
  • Mastering of the rural finance with strong experience in community based savings groups, cooperatives management, and rural community settings.
  • Strong training, facilitation, and community mobilization skills.
  • Experience in business development and income-generating project management.
  • Strong monitoring, evaluation, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work closely with rural communities and vulnerable populations.
