Job Description
We are seeking a Deputy Director General, Integrated Development and Pandemic/Outbreak Readiness for a 3-year-regular position (renewable) to work within the Integrated Development and Pandemic/Outbreak Readiness Unit at the International Vaccine Institute. (Duty station: Seoul, Korea)

Job Description

The DDG – IDPR will oversee the institutional strategic and scientific coordination/integration across units, ensuring programmatic integration across IVI scientific units. The SAG Agenda, SAG meeting particulars, scientific presentations, SAG membership, and SAG follow up are included. The incumbent will also manage ad hoc SAG meetings. The incumbent will also participate in SAG/SABs for IVI related entities (such as GHI or anticipated entities in Africa, Europe, or elsewhere). The incumbent will assist the DGO in the development of new strategic initiatives (such as AVEC Africa, ACHIEVE, BRIGHT, and or BRIDGEVAX (or similar large opportunities). Work alongside the Director General and interface, cultivate, or establish relationships with key funders and senior decision-makers therein: CEPI, Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust, or others. Leverage relevant networks to expand partnerships, replenish the pipeline, and strengthen stakeholder engagement. This role will act as a scientific and stakeholder counterbalance to the Director General and will provide an end-to-end view of IVI programs. The DDG – IDPR represents IVI formally at events where the DG’s attendance is necessary, but the DG is unavailable and will be a position reported as such to the relevant diplomatic entities. In this role, the incumbent may be assigned additional responsibilities for ideation, integration, and collaboration across units within IVI.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Provide input into the overall scientific strategy of the organization
    • Guide the design and development of research projects and collaborations in all areas of IVI according to the objectives of the Strategic Plan
    • Ensure integration and coordination of research activities in accordance with IVI’s vision and mission and the guidelines of the Board of Trustees as stated in the Strategic Plan across IVI units, offices, and other related entities
    • Support SPQR in the summary of IVI scientific impact/KPI related requirements for the institutional objectives
    • Evaluate the outcome of IVI research projects and recommend next steps for programs
    • Provide scientific expertise and recommendation to PIs and technical leads, including vaccine development through first-in-human and assist with transition to clinical development
    • Support in the preparation/review of grant applications

2. Ensure that the IVI vaccine pipeline is replenished through in-house development, in-licensing and/or collaborations
    • Oversight over I2N3 Program, IP, and Training; coordinate, cultivate, connect outside programs, organizations, institutions with relevant IVI stakeholders to ensure IVI interests
    • Develop and maintain relevant personal and professional networks. Identify new partnership and collaboration opportunities
    • Identify potential collaborators and funders in Korea and abroad that can help develop projects
    • Inform researchers of new opportunities for development and funding of research
    • Guide researchers in developing applications for new funding
3. Development of new programs and integration into other IVI units/functions; developing grant portfolio; assistance in trimming grant portfolio as needed

4. Strengthen and expand stakeholder commitment to IVI through discussions and grant proposals with major funders; the Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust and governments (including Korea, US, EU)

5. Represent IVI in external meetings, embassy events, scientific conferences and stakeholder engagement opportunities as needed in coordination with the Director General

6. Create and Chair an IVI “Project Oversight Committee” (POC) with representatives from I2N3 and the Science, CARE, and EPIC units. The “POC” to provide end-to-end assessment and management of IVI-funded projects through the 3 units of IVI; Science, CARE, and EPIC. These activities may include work with Regional Offices, Laboratories or other IVI related entities.

7. Coordinate the Scientific Advisory Group meeting. Interface with Science Committee of the Board of Trustees. Support and participate in other IVI leadership initiatives as required (e.g. vaccinology course).

Job Requirements and Qualifications

1. Education Requirements
    • MD or PhD

2. Related Field Work Experience
    • Senior-level experience in vaccine R&D and laboratory research
    • Industry-relevant experience across the spectrum of vaccine development through first-in-human
    • Minimum of 25 years’ relevant work experience
    • Proven track record and notable credibility within scientific community

3. Technical and Professional Skills / Knowledge
