Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationship

The position of Investment Officer is assigned to the Portfolio Management Division (PSPM) within the Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD). You will be based at our Resident Mission in Beijing, People's Republic of China (PRCM).

You will report to the Country Director PRCM and/or designated PSPM International Staff, and officer (senior/principal/lead, as applicable).

Your Role

As an Investment Officer, you will work alongside origination and portfolio colleagues. You will also be responsible for all analysis, risk management, and client relationship aspects of assigned transactions from first disbursement to final repayment, primarily covering transactions in the PRC and neighboring countries and engaging with borrowers as well as a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will:

a. Credit Monitoring

  • Prepare periodic credit monitoring reports, analyze client financial data, assess risks, and propose remedial actions.
  • Work with dealing officers to identify warning signals or potential issues and coordinate appropriate corrective measures.
  • Participate in missions related to transaction and portfolio monitoring.

b. Project Monitoring

  • Ensure client compliance with reporting obligations and address covenant breaches or unexpected developments.
  • Coordinate with clients and internal departments to design and implement remedial measures, including waivers or corrective actions.
  • Monitor development effectiveness, environmental and social compliance, and support client engagement through meetings and missions.

c. Database Maintenance

  • Maintain complete and accurate databases of legal, financing, security, and project documents.
  • Support portfolio tracking systems, including data on size, composition, and key characteristics.
  • Ensure data completeness and accuracy to support management information and reporting needs.

d. Project Reviews and Completion Reports

  • Conduct project assessments, analyze financial and developmental performance, and participate in field missions.
  • Collect data, conduct interviews, and evaluate projects for extended annual review reports (XARRs).
  • Prepare XARRs jointly with PSOD staff or consultants.

e. Administrative and Planning Support

  • Contribute to initiatives that strengthen coordination across ADB and with partner institutions.
  • Support preparation of inputs for annual work programs, budgets, and mid-year reviews.
  • Assist in developing and refining internal systems, procedures, and special projects.

Qualifications

You will need:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related fields; preferably with advanced training.
  • At least 8 years of experience in corporate, project, or infrastructure finance, financial institutions, or investment banking, preferably with major banks, IFIs, infrastructure funds, or consultancies.
  • Strong expertise in credit and valuation analysis, with a deep understanding of credit risk and portfolio performance drivers.
  • Proven client management skills across multiple financial products, including loans and guarantees.
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to evaluate complex factors and identify solutions.
  • Ability to work independently: set priorities, plan tasks, and execute effectively.
  • Experience conducting research, analyzing data, and preparing detailed reports and papers.
  • Confidence and skills to lead client discussions and negotiations.
  • Ability to guide administrative staff and work collaboratively in multicultural teams.
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English and Mandarin.

Additional Information

This appointment is open to internal and external applicants.

This opening is a local staff position. It is open only to nationals and permanent residents of People's Republic of China.

This is a fixed term appointment with option to renew, initially for a period of up to 3 years, or up to the Normal Retirement Date (NRD), whichever comes earlier, for the purpose(s) and conditions determined by ADB, in accordance with Administrative Order No. 2.01 (Recruitment and Appointment). After the initial fixed-term period, ADB may choose to renew the appointment for up to an additional 3 years or not renewed. This decision will be made in the overall interest of ADB, based on factors including but not limited to the requirement of Staff's particular blend of skills and experience for the medium-term work program of the organizational unit, sufficient funding to cover the renewed period, and Staff's performance and suitability for employment. There is no limit to the number of renewals up to NRD. However, this appointment is not convertible to a regular appointment.
