The Structured Products team at IFC sits within the Clients & Products department and is responsible for designing, structuring, and executing complex capital markets and risk transfer solutions that go beyond traditional loans and equity. The team’s mandate is to mobilize private capital at scale, optimize balance sheets, and create new asset classes in emerging markets through innovative financial structures. The team’s strategy and implementation work focuses on three main pillars: (i) increasing financial access and inclusion; (ii) scaling sustainability and climate finance; and (iii) making financial systems more efficient, resilient, and sophisticated. The Distressed Assets Recovery Program (DARP) —part of the Structured Products Team— focuses on investments in the distressed assets space, establishing investment platforms and building servicing capacity in emerging markets globally. DARP has a strong track record of transactions, and IFC is looking to further expand its investment activities in this line of business. IFC's priorities in Clients & Products are to: (i) grow investment and advisory solutions across all regions of operation, while achieving strong profitability and development impact (ii) build new and nurture client relationships to position IFC as a preferred partner for key clients (iii) manage portfolio of assets for strong profitability and impact; (iv) support local companies while improving transparency and corporate governance; (v) catalyze foreign investment, including through B loans, parallel loans, and other forms of capital mobilization; (vi) introduce and develop new financial solutions, products and platforms; (vii) build long-term partnerships with strong regional players; (viii) develop scalable client-, sector- and country-level solutions through upstream and downstream interventions; and (ix) act as a thought leader and innovator in products and client solutions globally. IFC is seeking an Associate Investment Officer to support activities across Clients & Products – Structured Products. The selected candidate will complement the existing cadre of Investment Officers and specialists delivering on IFC’s strategy through the innovation of new products and the execution of complex investments. The position will report to the Senior Manager, Structured Products and to the supervisors responsible for the relevant units within the Structured Products team. The position will be based in Washington, DC. There are two positions available for this role. Duties & Accountabilities: The Associate Investment Officer will have a wide range of evolving responsibilities in line with the strategic priorities of Clients & Products. The anticipated scope of duties and responsibilities includes the following: • Help develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for assigned projects, including straightforward transactions, drawing on relevant knowledge and experience.
• Participate in transaction negotiations as appropriate; use advanced financial competencies and personal influencing skills to help overcome impasses and drive successful outcome.
• Work with senior staff to help develop a strong pipeline of high-quality, innovative and increasingly complex investment opportunities.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, global and regional private sector entities, banking and multilateral partners, and government officials to support sector development and originate investment opportunities
• Identify and evaluate opportunities to enhance the social development impact of new and portfolio projects.
• Review company information and prepare analysis and reports on periodic financial statements, project performance, and other information submitted by clients.
• Create, analyze and assess complex financial analysis and pricing/valuation models.
• Collaborate within team and with regional teams to help develop global and regional strategies and support related business development and promotion efforts.
• Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and technical assistance colleagues to add value to our clients' businesses, identify pragmatic solutions to sector-specific challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact.
• Assist with various projects, tasks or assignments, as the need may arise.
• Prepare documentation for IFC internal processes, including but not limited to credit ratings, investment valuations and compliance reports covering IFC’s financial, environmental and social, insurance and legal requirements.
• Work closely with portfolio staff in IFC regional offices and other DARP team members to monitor the performance of underlying assets acquired by DARP facilities, evaluate risk and recommend active portfolio management actions. Provide support to some corporate initiatives within DARP.
• Contribute to the research, and knowledge management agenda of Clients & Products.
Selection Criteria
• Master's degree in finance, economics or other related areas. Candidates with an MBA, CPA or CFA designation would have an advantage.
• Minimum of five years of relevant experience in emerging markets investment roles, including exposure to debt and structured products.
• Strong understanding of sector drivers, business and market development cycles, and how business performance and long-term competitiveness and viability are assessed within a sector, as well as how sector dynamics may evolve within a country or region.
• Proven analytical skills, including financial analysis, equity valuation, and financial modeling, with the ability to assess company financial information, investment projects and industry indicators. Strong credit skills and sound business judgment.
• Ability to oversee and provide quality control feedback on financial models prepared by analysts.
• Demonstrated capacity to build productive and mutually beneficial relationships and networks, both internally and externally, to identify business opportunities, discuss structuring alternatives, and resolve issues.
• Commitment to sustainable development.
• Original thinking / quick learning abilities with strong initiative and drive, as well as attention to details.
• Good team player with strong interpersonal skills, and commitment to work in a respectful, team oriented and multi-cultural environment.
• Excellent oral and written presentation skills in English are required
• Willingness to travel.
