Regular and comprehensive project progress reports submitted on schedule. Site inspection and quality control reports documented. Duties and Responsibilities
Summary: The Civil Engineer supports the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) by leading the planning, design, monitoring, and delivery of civil infrastructure projects critical to the mission’s operational effectiveness and safety. The role focuses on horizontal infrastructure such as roads, helipads, drainage systems, and protective structures (e.g., Hesco bastions). Key Responsibilities: • Develop detailed engineering designs, technical specifications, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and cost estimates. • Analyze geotechnical and hydrological data to inform infrastructure planning. • Advice on site preparation tasks including demolition, land clearing, excavation, backfilling, and compaction. • Recommend the construction and maintenance of roads, drainage networks, reinforced concrete structures, and protective barriers. • Manage materials procurement, quality control, testing, and handling of construction materials. • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and UN engineering policies throughout project execution. • Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily site reports, progress updates, defects and completion reports. • Coordinate and liaise with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and external partners to ensure timely project delivery. • Analyze and assist with the support for emergency infrastructure repairs and rapid response operations as needed. • Mentor and train junior engineers and national staff. • Perform such other tasks as assigned by Chief Engineer
Qualifications/special skills
First level University degree in Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field is required. Minimum of five years’ experience in civil engineering, with proven expertise in roadworks, drainage, and reinforced concrete structures is required Experience working in remote or austere environments is highly desirable. Familiarity with engineering design software such as AutoCAD and project management tools like MS Project. Previous experience in UN peacekeeping or international missions is an asset.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required.
