Duties and Responsibilities
Background: This internship is located within Cluster 1:"The Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability" of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org). Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for carrying out the following functions: 1 - Assist in substantive research and reviews related to the work of the cluster, in the areas of Climate Change, Water Resources, Energy, Food Systems/Agriculture and Circular Economy. 2 - Contribute to background notes, talking points and policy briefs for activities related to the cluster. 3 - Conduct data compilation, analysis, cleaning, visualization, cataloging and tabulation. 4 - Generate graphs and figures using online databases for publishing purposes. 5 - Prepare literature reviews, research papers and presentations. 6 - Research, draft and update documents, analytical summaries. 7 - Take notes and draft related summary or verbatim reports. 8 - Take pictures during events. 9 - Organize and contribute to the preparation and implementation of meetings and workshops. 10- Support activities of the Cluster, both substantively and administratively 11 - Create and assist in updating content on ESCWA's website including initiative pages, events, and projects on regular basis. 12 - Assist in other ad-hoc activities in the Cluster, when necessary, as instructed by the supervisor
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above); 2. Applicants must: (a) be computer literate in standard software applications. (b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and (c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Knowledge in sustainable development or related issues is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
