Mission and objectives
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) was established by the United Nations Security Council to support Libya in its transition toward a peaceful, stable, and unified state. UNSMIL’s mission is to facilitate a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process aimed at restoring legitimate, unified, and accountable institutions, strengthening governance and the rule of law, and advancing sustainable peace and national reconciliation. In line with its mandate, UNSMIL works to: - Support inclusive political dialogue and consensus-building among Libyan stakeholders. - Assist efforts to establish a constitutional and electoral framework leading to credible national elections. - Promote respect for human rights, international humanitarian law, and the protection of civilians. - Strengthen state institutions, security arrangements, and coordination to support stability. - Counter misinformation and disinformation by providing accurate, timely, and accessible public information about the political process and the Mission’s work. - Public information and outreach are central to UNSMIL’s mandate, ensuring that Libyans across all regions and communities have access to reliable information and opportunities to engage constructively in shaping their country’s future.Context
In August 2025, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced a political roadmap aimed at advancing a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned process toward restoring unified, legitimate, and accountable institutions. The roadmap outlines key political, legal, and institutional steps required to overcome the current political impasse and move Libya toward sustainable stability. A central component of this roadmap is the Structured Dialogue, an inclusive forum that brings together Libyans from across regions and backgrounds to identify concrete solutions to issues hindering the political and electoral process, and to generate actionable recommendations to support implementation of the roadmap. To support informed public engagement with the roadmap and the Structured Dialogue, UNSMIL conducts extensive public outreach and communications activities, producing digital content such as videos, graphics, and web-based materials. In a complex information environment, these efforts are essential to promoting transparency, countering misinformation and disinformation, and ensuring that accurate information reaches broad audiences across Libya. The Online Volunteer will support these outreach efforts by contributing to the development and adaptation of public-facing communications content related to the roadmap and the Structured Dialogue.Task Description
