Mission and objectives
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that supports human development globally by promoting volunteerism and by mobilizing volunteers. It is administered by UNDP and operates amidst growing recognition that volunteerism makes important contributions, economically and socially, to more cohesive societies by building trust and reciprocity among citizens. The UNV Regional Offices (RO) provide oversight and strategic guidance to the UNV Field Units in their respective geographical assignments and are mainly accountable for the placement of UN Volunteers mobilized for UN Agencies, Funds, and Programmes focused on peace, development, and humanitarian needs. The Regional Offices also lead in scoping and delivering UNV’s advisory service offer on volunteer infrastructure. The Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) is based in Amman, Jordan. In December 2023, through Resolution A/RES/78/127, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026) and UNV has been invited to facilitate the initiative.Context
