Duties and Responsibilities
The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. In line with this mandate, the Subregional Office for East and North-East Asia (SOENEA) work with China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Japan, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation to address environmental challenges in North-East Asia. It also serves as the Secretariat of the North-East Asian Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation (NEASPEC). NEASPEC is the first intergovernmental mechanism created by all six countries in North-East Asia. It implements five programmatic areas: (a) Air Pollution; (b) Biodiversity and Nature Conservation; (c) Marine Protected Areas, (d) Low Carbon Cities, and (e) Desertification and Land Degradation. 1. ESCAP is seeking an individual contractor to support its initiative under the direct supervision of the Deputy Head of Office. The contractor will be responsible for the following tasks: a. Collaborate with key national focal points and other partners in member States to implement follow-up actions from the 28th Senior Officials Meeting of NEASPEC. b. Support the NEASPEC Project Manager in the day-to-day secretarial tasks, including the organization of NEASPEC internal and external meetings c. Support the implementation of the Biodiversity and Nature Conservation programmatic area under NEASPEC, including supporting management of the migratory bird's project funded by the Russian Federation and related activities, and the establishment of the Big Cat Network in North-East Asia and the organization of the Expert Group Meeting related to the network. d. Support the organization of the WWF-led Wetland Management Training Programme. e. Support the preparation of a NEASPEC paper on Desertification and Land Degradation. 2. The contractor is required to deliver the following assignments: a. Preparation and coordination for the training programme under the migratory bird project (31 January 2026) b. Implementation of the training programme in collaboration with WWF Hong Kong and completion of the report on the training programme (28 February 2026) c. Preparation of the outline of the Big Cat Network in North-East Asia, including a provisional list of participants, network modalities, and draft programme for the expert group meeting (31 March 2026) d. Big Cats Network EGM report (30 April 2026) e. Finalization of the analytical study on assessing the impacts of agricultural activities on NEASPEC flagship birds (31 May 2026) f. Support the finalization of a paper on desertification and land degradation (30 June 2026) 3. The contractor is required to work at the duty station from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00.
Qualifications/special skills
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required. - Previous experience with the United Nations system, and specifically on environmental programmed is required. - Previous experience on nature conservation and migratory species is an advantage.
Languages
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is required.
