The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The purpose of the programme is:

To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;

To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Technical Cooperation (TC) consists of the Office of the Deputy Director General, four regional Divisions (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean), the Division of Programme Support and Coordination and the Division of the Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy (PACT). It provides strategic direction for the IAEA's technical cooperation programme, and is responsible (in close collaboration with Member States) for the planning, formulation, implementation and monitoring of the programme, in line with the IAEA Medium Term Strategy.

The Division of Programme Support and Coordination (TCPC) is responsible for the development, promotion and consistent application of strategies, policies, standards, tools and systems to support the TC programme. This includes quality assurance and enhanced results-based programme management, training and capacity development, efficient management of financial resources, data and information, as well as outreach and reporting.

Main Purpose

The intern will provide support to the outreach activities of the TC communication team with a focus on the preparation of web articles, as well as logistical support for TC activities related to the General Conference and other events, including events, exhibitions and seminars.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Under the guidance of the Communication Advisor and staff in the TC Communication Team the intern will:

  • Support research and drafting web articles and social media posts on TC related activities.

  • Prepare photo carousels and e-postcards for social media using digital tools such as Canva, support mini outreach campaigns on social media. 

  • Assist in organizing TC exhibitions and side events, including digital events, to support increased outreach and visibility of the TC Programme to external parties. 

  • Support the TC Communication Team in delivering communication services to TC Divisions, including analysis of outreach, and photography assignments. 

  • Support the collection and filing of TC photographs. 

  • Provide other support as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University Degree in public information, communication, journalism, English or related fields.

  • Excellent writer, conversant with social media, some experience in photography, document layout and design (experience with InDesign or Photoshop an advantage), and event support.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of one other official IAEA language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is desirable

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.

  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.

  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.

  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.

  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
