DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The UN-Water Expert Group on Water and Climate Change is undertaking a study on the water requirements of climate mitigation measures, in partnership with the International Universities Climate Alliance (IUCA). The study is being led by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as the co-coordinators of the Expert Group. The final report will be launched at the 2024 Bonn Climate Conference in June 2024. The report will be used to prepare an UN-Water Analytical Brief which is scheduled to be released at UNFCCC COP29.

The purpose of this assignment is thus to support the UN-Water Expert Group on Water and Climate Change, to maximise its contribution to COP 29 by finalizing Expert Group content of the study, supporting the organization of an event at the Bonn Climate Conference and preparing text for a draft Analytical Brief.

The consultant, under the supervision of Coordinator and Programme Officer, and close guidance of the EG on Water and Climate Change, and more specifically of its co-coordinators UNECE, UNESCO and WMO will carry out the following tasks:

a. Supervise the day-to-day progress of the study.

b. Liaise between IUCA and the steering committee of the study, as well as the advisory group.

c. Undertake drafting of Expert Group text for the study report.

d. Support preparing and delivering an event to launch the final report of the study at the Bonn Climate Conference in June 2024.

e. Draft text for an analytical brief based on the study on the water dependencies of climate mitigation to be released prior to UNFCCC COP 29 (11-24 November 2024).

f. Maximise the contribution of the Expert Group to the consideration of water issues at COP29.

g. Support the implementation of the Expert Group's Water for Climate Mitigation Strategy.

h. Assist the Expert Group with other Water Policy and Strategy matters at the request of the co-coordinators or as initiated by the consultant.

i. Travel once to Geneva and Bonn early-mid June.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, public policy, public administration, natural resources management, environment

Engineering or a related field.
Experience
Minimum 15 years of experience in providing services to global process and in water policy issues in support of national meteorological and hydrological services.

Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of WMO would be an advantage.
