The Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF)

Following endorsement of the World Meteorological Congress in 2021, the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) has been established by WMO, UNDP and UNEP as a UN a Multi-Partner Trust Fund. SOFF became operational in July 2022. Its purpose is to effectively support developing countries, in particular Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States, in generating and internationally exchanging basic weather and climate observations to achieve compliance with the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON).

The SOFF Secretariat is hosted by WMO in Geneva and follows WMO regulations and rules with respect to all administrative policies and procedures. It comprises a small team of professional staff and operates under the overall guidance of the Steering Committee and is accountable to it.

The request is for an intern who will report to the SOFF Secretariat Partnership Officer and will also work in close collaboration with the other members of the SOFF Secretariat team. The period of internship will be from 1 June 2024 to 30 May 2025, and the incumbents will perform the following duties:

a) Provide support in the preparation of documentation, communication material, and logistical support of SOFF Steering Committee and Advisory Board meetings;

b) Work with the Associate Advocacy and Communications Officer in support of communications, including website maintenance and social media management;

c) Work with the Partnerships Officer in the update of the SOFF Resource Mobilization and Outreach Strategy;

d) Support SOFF Global Facilitators in their resource mobilization and advocacy activities;

e) Support engagement with related strategic initiatives such as Early Warnings for All or Water at the Heart of Climate Action;

f) Support the organization and maintenance of document repositories and databases;

g) Any other responsibilities as required by the SOFF Secretariat.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Undergraduate or master's degree in the field of journalism, media, communications, international relations, policy, or any related field. Focus on climate change is an asset.
Experience
No specific experience required. However, experience working in areas related to the SOFF and WMO, or communicating about climate and environmental topics are an asset.

Other requirements
- Proven experience in communication related to climate or environmental topics, including website & social media management.

- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and other web-based analytical and communication tools.

Languages
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.
