Job Description
Org. Setting and Reporting
The position is located in the Office of the United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS), in the Office of the Regional Ombudsman based in Geneva. UNOMS was established as the informal pillar of the internal system of administration of justice to make available to employees the services of impartial and neutral persons to address work-related concerns. The Conflict Resolution Officer reports to the Regional Ombudsman in Geneva and works under the general authority of the Chief of Service and the United Nations Ombudsman.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority the Conflict Resolution Officer will be responsible for the following duties: Assist in providing an impartial, independent, and informal conflict resolution mechanism for addressing the workplace related concerns of employees of the Secretariat. Assist in conducting mediations, facilitated dialogues and other conflict resolution processes, including mediations referred by the UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT). Explore with employees options and the different avenues open to them, taking into account the rights and obligations existing between the Organization and its employees. Assist in identifying and analyzing policies, procedures and practices that cause tension or conflict and participate in analyzing systemic trends. Participate in drafting periodic activity reports which provide statistical overview, analysis of the issues and trends observed for further systemic analysis. Offer information to employees about the functions and mandate of the Ombudsman within the framework of the overall information and communication plan. Keep up to date regarding human resources policies and practices, as well as developments in the field of conflict resolution. Make presentations to various audiences as part of outreach efforts and deliver conflict competence workshops supported by UNOMS. Travel to conduct outreach and provide conflict resolutions as required. Perform any other duties or special projects to support UNOMS in carrying out its mandate, as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in conflict resolution, law, administration, management, human resources, social sciences, or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in workplace conflict resolution, law, public administration, human resources management or related area is required. Experience working in an international setting is desirable. Experience in alternative conflict resolution is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
