VPU Context: The World Bank Group’s Eastern and Southern Africa region spans 26 geographically, culturally, and economically diverse countries stretching from the Red Sea in the north to the Cape of Good Hope in the south, home to approximately 700 million people. The region faces significant development challenges, including high public debt, inflation, food insecurity, water insecurity and an extreme poverty rate of around 43.6%, alongside vulnerability to climate change and health crises. Key priorities for the region include building human capital, strengthening regional connectivity, and enhancing resilience to these compounding pressures.
