Duties and Responsibilities
The global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) is part of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. It is key to the Organization’s ability to reach the peoples of the world and to share the United Nations story with them in their own languages. These centres, working in coordination with the UN system, reach out to the media and educational institutions, engage in partnerships with governments, local civil society organizations and the private sector, and maintain libraries and electronic information resources. Just as UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries. Applications are invited for one (1) UNPAID internship assignment at United Nations Information Centre for the Caribbean Area in Port of Spain. This internship is designed to be full-time for six (6) months, working three (3) days per week at the UNIC office with two (2) days of telecommuting per week. The Intern will support the implementation, monitoring and assessment of the UNIC’s 2026 Outreach Programme. The Intern must cover time working hours (35 hours per week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 15:30). The Intern will work under the supervision of the UNIC’s Director and National Information Officer. The Intern will report to the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre and will contribute to and perform the following duties: - Assist in the researching, selection and compilation of news content for the UNIC’s weekday media monitoring reports. - Assist with background research, information design and graphic design required for a UNIC-produced handbook to support the coordination and delivery of outreach activities and products. - Assist with the design and execution of an internal communications campaign to promote the use of the UNIC-produced Outreach Handbook to UN Caribbean offices and agencies. - Assist in the planning and production of the UNIC’s outreach activities and products, including drafting text, creating presentations, and administering audience feedback mechanisms. - Assist in the design and distribution of audience feedback surveys and questionnaires to monitor the impact of the UNIC’s outreach activities and products. - Assist in the planning and execution of the UN Caribbean Five Years Forward campaign for the Sustainable Development Goals. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). -Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. -Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. -Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software MS applications. Knowledge of design software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva is desirable. -Interest in outreach, advocacy, and/or communications monitoring and evaluation is desirable. -Applicants must demonstrate the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language or Dutch is desirable.
