Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Women’s engagement in peace and security is essential to achieving sustainable peace. A robust body of evidence demonstrates that women’s participation in peace and security processes enhances their overall effectiveness by strengthening the protection efforts of peacekeepers, improving the prevention of conflict, and accelerating economic recovery. Women’s meaningful participation also contributes to the negotiation, conclusion, and implementation of more durable peace agreements.
UN Women in Sierra Leone programmes on women, peace and security are guided by a comprehensive framework of international commitments to women’s rights and civil society movement, including support to security sector institutions. These include United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and its seven subsequent resolutions 1820, 1888, 1889, 1960, 2106, 2122, and 2242. Additional key reference frameworks include the Beijing Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
Enhancing women’s engagement for sustainable peace requires an integrated and holistic approach that simultaneously addresses conflict prevention, conflict resolution, and post-conflict recovery. This approach must also strengthen national accountability mechanisms and ensure the protection of women from all forms of human rights violations, including sexual and gender-based violence, while promoting women’s voices and agencies as a foundation for long-term peace and stability.
