Duties and Responsibilities
The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) has been mandated by the General Assembly in its resolution 77/301 to clarify the fate and whereabouts of missing persons in Syria and provide adequate support to victims, survivors, and families of those missing. The IIMP’s founding resolution places emphasis on the full and meaningful representation of victims, survivors, and families of missing persons. The internship is located within the Data and Digital Analysis Section (DDAS), Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP). Under the direct supervision of the Open-Source Analyst and the overall guidance of the Section Chief of DDAS, the intern will have the opportunity to work closely with analysts, investigators, and information management officers at IIMP. The duties of intern may include, but are not limited to: (1) conducting targeted open-source research, collection and analysis, on topics of relevance to the mandate of IIMP; (2) contributing to the preparation of analytical reports and other work products, including through translation as needed; (3) reviewing information and documentation collected and archived; (4) assisting with interviews or other forms of engagements with victims, survivors and/or families of missing or disappeared persons, as related to the work of the Section; and (5) keeping abreast of the situation in Syria and sharing information with the team. The intern may be exposed to materials with sensitive or distressing subject matters. The intern is also responsible for: Demonstrating professionalism and discretion; Completing assigned tasks in a timely and accurate manner; Maintaining confidentiality of all records and information accessed during the internship; Displaying a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the principles of the Charter; Upholding respect for colleagues and stakeholders, especially when interacting with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. For this position, fluency in Arabic is required. Please provide details of any experience where you have used Arabic in a structured setting (academic, professional, volunteer, or other), particularly for understanding written material and conveying its content to others. Applicants must be familiar with open-source research and investigation methodologies. Any prior training, academic or professional experience in online research and analysis of open-source intelligence, including from social media, is desirable. Please provide examples. Experience in a multicultural international work environment is an asset. Please provide examples.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required for the internship.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
