Mission and objectives

UNDP works in more than 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. UNDP has been present in Malawi since 1964. Working closely with the Government of Malawi, civil society and the private sector, UNDP' s work aims to contribute to economic growth, sustainable environmental management, and democratic governance and accountability in Malawi. UNDP’s Country Programme Document is closely aligned to the Malawi Agenda 2063 and supports Malawi’s aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. UNDP ‘s programme is designed to address the interlinked issues of poverty, inequality and vulnerability to shocks and is managed within two portfolios: Responsive Institutions and Citizen Engagement which works towards strengthening effective, accountable and inclusive governance that promotes civic engagement, respect for human rights, rule of law, peace and democracy. It also works towards strengthening data generation and analysis. Resilience and Sustainable Growth which focusses on enhancing economic innovation, inclusive business, job creation, and renewable energy access. It also works towards helping Malawi adapt to climate change and build resilience to disasters.

Context

The Country Office produces a wide range of communication materials—posters, PowerPoint presentations, reports, infographics, illustrations, maps, quote cards, brochures, and fact sheets—to support ongoing programmes and public information campaigns. To ensure visually appealing, impactful, and professionally designed products, additional graphic design support is needed. This assignment will strengthen the quality and accessibility of UNDP’s communication materials and enhance the visibility of development work in Malawi.

Task Description

Under the guidance of the Communications Team and the Public Knowledge function, the Online Volunteer(s) will: A. Design & Layout Support • Develop and design graphic materials including: o Posters, flyers, brochures o Infographics, fact sheets, illustrations o PowerPoint templates and presentations o Maps and visual summaries o Document layouts for reports and briefs B. Collaboration with Programme Teams • Work closely with programme teams across thematic portfolios to visualise their concepts, ideas, results, and outputs. • Translate technical or narrative programme information into clear, visually compelling communication products. • Support teams in structuring data, stories, and results into infographics, visual summaries, and branded communication assets. • Offer creative options and professional guidance to ensure products align with communication objectives and enhance public understanding. C. Visual Identity & Branding • Ensure all products adhere to UNDP corporate branding guidelines. • Maintain consistent typography, colour schemes, and layout standards. • Deliver both print-ready and digital-optimized formats. D. Collaboration & Final Deliverables • Develop design drafts and refine them based on feedback from both the Communications Team and programme focal points. • Provide final editable source files (AI, PSD, INDD, PPTX, etc.). • Prepare 10–15 finalized graphic products depending on office priorities. E. Deliverables (Indicative) By the end of the assignment, the Online Volunteer(s) are expected to deliver: • A set of polished templates for communication materials. • At least 5 professionally designed products (reports, infographics, posters, etc.). • Bilingual versions of materials where applicable. • All editable source files and print-ready outputs.
